THR<\/a> reports that Netflix is developing an adult animated series based on Powers, the long-running comic series written by Brian Michael Bendis and illustrated by Michael Avon Oeming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is Powers<\/em> About?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The series is a mix of superhero drama, crime noir, and police procedural. It follows Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, two homicide detectives assigned to investigate cases involving people with superhuman abilities, known as “powers.” Walker himself used to be a costumed superhero named Diamond, but became a police officer after he lost his abilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both creators are involved in the Powers<\/em> animated series, with Bendis writing the pilot and Oeming “participating in the visual development for the show.<\/mark>” Dark Horse Entertainment\u2018s Keith Goldberg and Chris Tongue are executive producing the series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Powers<\/em> was originally launched as an independent comic, but was soon published by Image Comics. It won the Eisner Award for Best New Series in 2001. It later moved to Icon Comics, a Marvel imprint designed for select “A-list” creators. The comic then moved to DC Comics as part of its Jinxworld imprint, and finally, to Dark Horse Comics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Powers<\/em> Has Previously Been Adapted<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Powers<\/em> has actually been adapted as a TV series before, but in live-action. Back in 2015, Powers premiered on the PlayStation Network (remember that?) with Sharlto Copley (District 9<\/em>) and Susan Heyward (The Boys<\/em>) starring as Walker and Pilgrim, respectively. The series received mixed reviews, but was still renewed for a second season before it was cancelled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Torso<\/em> is Also at Netflix<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As revealed last year, Netflix is also in early development on another Bendis comic: Torso<\/em>. The feature film adaptation<\/a> of the graphic novel by Bendis and Marc Andreyko tells the true story of Eliot Ness investigating a mysterious serial killer known as the Cleveland Torso Murderer. There have been many attempts to bring this story to the big screen, but Netflix seems to be very confident, having acquired the rights in a seven-figure deal following an intense bidding war. Weapons<\/em> writer\/director Zach Cregger is one of the producers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
