Deadline<\/a> reports that Vertical has acquired the North American rights to The Weight<\/em> and slated the film for a September 18<\/strong> release. The historical action drama stars Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe, and was one of the hottest films to come out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Our own Chris Bumbray loved the film (more on that later), so I’m excited to check this one out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Weight<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

“When Samuel (Hawke) is torn from his daughter and sent to a brutal prison, Warden Clancy (Crowe) offers a high-stakes proposition: smuggle gold out of a remote mine with a dangerous crew of prisoners and he\u2019ll win his freedom,<\/mark>” reads the official synopsis. “But as the group journeys into the unforgiving wilderness, the real threat isn\u2019t the terrain \u2013 it\u2019s the betrayal and violence festering within their ranks. Surrounded by greed, suspicion, and danger, Samuel must risk everything to reunite with his child.<\/mark>“<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Weight<\/em> marks the directorial debut of Padraic McKinley, with Matthew Chapman (Runaway Jury<\/em>) and Shelby Gaines (Wildcat<\/em>) penning the script from a story by Matthew Booi (Age of Samurai: Battle for Japan<\/em>) and Leo Scherman (Trench 11<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The Weight<\/em> is the result of a truly special collaboration between an exceptional cast, led by Ethan and Russell, and my partners at Fields Entertainment, augenschein, Under the Influence, and Construction Films,<\/mark>” said McKinley in a statement. “Seeing the film connect with and energize audiences at Sundance and Berlinale has been incredibly rewarding, and has only amplified my excitement to partner up with Vertical to bring this kind of big-screen, throwback experience to theaters in September.<\/mark>“<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vertical Partner Peter Jarowey added, “Anchored by powerhouse performances from Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe, The Weight<\/em> is a smart, character-driven thriller that captures the tension and sophistication of the great 1970s classics while feeling sharp and contemporary for today\u2019s audiences. What Did We Think?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In his review, Bumbray compared The Weight<\/em> to William Friedkin\u2019s Sorcerer<\/em><\/a>, adding that the film was easily the biggest highlight of Sundance 2026. “Overall, The Weight<\/em> is an immersive ride from beginning to end, and it would be a crime if it doesn\u2019t get a theatrical release, as this is large-canvas filmmaking that absolutely kills in a theater,<\/mark>” he wrote. “Imagine Train Dreams<\/a><\/em> if it were an action movie, and you\u2019ll have a pretty good idea of what The Weight<\/em> is like.<\/mark>” You can check out the rest of his review right here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
