The Mummy 4 directors say Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz wouldn’t return unless they loved the script

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are set to direct The Mummy 4, which will feature the long-awaited reunion of Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, but it’s something they never believed would happen.

How Radio Silence Landed the Movie

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the Radio Silence duo shared that William Sherrick, a producer on their films, made it happen. “William’s always way ahead of us,” Gillett said. “Matt and I, what we’re doing next is we’re finishing the day, we have eight setups, and William’s always talking about the next thing. And he was like, ‘Hey, I think I’m gonna get us Mummy.’ In our heads, we’re going, ‘That’d be f—ing crazy. There’s no way William’s gonna pull it off.’

He continued, “Cut to, we’re finishing Abigail, and we’re meeting with Dave Coggeshall, the writer, and we’re designing a pitch. We have been in this line of work long enough to know that nothing is real until it’s very, very real. It’s all speculative, and it feels great to give energy to really wonderful ideas, but we have learned to keep those opportunities a little bit at arm’s distance because it’s just easy to have your heart broken.

Is The Mummy 3 Canon?

The success of The Mummy prompted a sequel, The Mummy Returns, but it would be almost eight years until the gang returned for a third outing. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor wasn’t nearly as well-received as the first two, especially as Maria Bello replaced Weisz as Evelyn. When asked if they consider it canon to their movie, Bettinelli-Olpin said, “Well, Rachel is in this one.

That should answer the question for you,” Gillett said.

I’d wager that nothing in The Mummy 4 will outright conflict with Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, but it just won’t be referenced. Although I wouldn’t put it past them to include a little meta-dig at the sequel.

The Mummy 4 Tease

It’s still too early to reveal any real details on The Mummy 4, but the pair teased that it will be “really, really beautiful and scary and sweeping, and it’s awesome.” Bettinelli-Olpin added that he doesn’t think “Brendan and Rachel are getting involved unless they love that script, and what they read, I think they really liked. And it’s a good script. It’s gonna be fun to make.

The sequel is currently slated for a May 19, 2028 release.
