The Dates are Set

Marketing for Avengers: Doomsday started late last year with a couple of teasers released with James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash. The teaser trailers and the teaser poster declared December 18 as the release date (complete with a timer counting down with each teaser). Then, last week, the trailer for the much-anticipated Dune: Part Three dropped with its own teaser posters. Dune: Part Three would also advertise December 18 as its release date. While both Marvel Studios and Warner Bros. locked down the date quite some time, the marketing somewhat seals everything for the time being. Now, release dates can always change and the promos can always be revised, but if both movies hold firm…could we have another Barbenheimer on our hands?

Avengers: Dunesday

If we do have another Barbenheimer, the nickname is obvious enough that it’s pretty much already set by Robert Downey Jr. and Timothée Chalamet. Avengers: Dunesday is sure to be a good competitor to the Barbenheimer phenomenon as both are big sci-fi franchises with large fanbases. When Barbie was announced, it sounded like a cash grab, a la Battleship, but when Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach had their names attached, it aroused more curiosity as it turned out to be something more (complete with getting recognized for awards season). So, the Hasbro property not only had the Barbie toy fans, but moviegoers were now wondering what the film was really going to be. Then, you have Oppenheimer, which really had only one true appeal as a summer movie, and that’s Christopher Nolan. Oppenheimer would have been more at home as a late-year awards contender as a talky historical drama with very little action, but Nolan is associated with grand blockbuster movies. Additionally, he continued his love with the 70 mm IMAX format for Oppenheimer, which gave the film additional appeal. So, Nolan fans and cinema lovers would lovingly flock to Oppenheimer.

With Avengers: Dunesday, you have two franchise entries whose past installments have already raked in a large amount of dough. The first Dune from Denis Villeneuve had to struggle harder as it came out around the time of the pandemic, but Dune: Part Two would be released when theaters were back to full operation and the film would end its run with $715 million globally. Additionally, Dune: Part Two ended on a note that wasn’t exactly a cliffhanger, but an open end, which had fans of the movies and books alike anticipating the follow-up chapter.

For the MCU, the Avengers have been reliable moneymakers. However, with every entry, all the movies that came before it have received some pretty positive receptions on average. After Avengers: Endgame, a debate rages on amongst fans on whether the recent phase of movies were of quality, but the movie-going public has not turned out as often as they used to with earlier solo films. Despite exceptions like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Deadpool and Wolverine, the Marvel Universe hasn’t been as consistent with success and movies like The Fantastic Four: First Steps would be discussed as possibilities of the studio finding its footing once again.

Avengers is sure to be a massive hit despite the overall reception of the MCU, but one thing’s for sure: Dune: Part Three will have a slight advantage with exclusive IMAX screenings. Dune was shot with IMAX cameras and secured at least three weeks on the format. The brand saw a huge uptick in business recently, thanks to films like Sinners and F1. The premium format has a premium charge, which may help Dune earn more money despite Avengers playing in adjacent premium screens. IMAX is the one that is establishing its reputation with its giant screen and picture quality. However, Avengers: Doomsday will eventually take advantage of the IMAX screens later on, so sales have the potential to boost.

While the memes won’t be nearly as fun as Barbenheimer since those two films are as far from each other in terms of tone as you can get, sci-fi and action fans will be having an amazing Christmas this year with these two epic franchise titles to choose from.

Dune: Part Two racked up nearly $700 million at the worldwide box office, paving the way for the third Dune film that writer/director Denis Villeneuve and stars Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya all expressed interest in making during the build-up to the second movie’s release. While the first two Dune movies were both based on the story told in Frank Herbert’s novel Dune, the third movie would move on to different source material: Dune Messiah, the second book in Herbert’s series. The film adaptation is simply called Dune: Part Three, and it’s heading for a December 18, 2026 theatrical release. With that date still nine months off, the first trailer for Dune: Part Three has just been unveiled, and you can check it out in the embed above.

Story and Cast

The novel Dune Messiah has the following description: Dune Messiah continues the story of Paul Atreides, better known-and feared-as the man christened Muad’Dib. As Emperor of the Known Universe, he possesses more power than a single man was ever meant to wield. Worshipped as a religious icon by the fanatical Fremens, Paul faces the enmity of the political houses he displaced when he assumed the throne-and a conspiracy conducted within his own sphere of influence. And even as House Atreides begins to crumble around him from the machinations of his enemies, the true threat to Paul comes to his lover, Chani, and the unborn heir to his family’s dynasty.

Chalamet and Zendaya returned to the roles of Paul Atreides and Chani for the new film, along with Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia Atreides, Robert Pattinson as Scytale, Isaach de Bankolé as Farok, Nakoa-Wolf Momoa as Leto II Atreides, and Ida Brooke as Ghanima Atreides.

Epic Conclusion

Although the film is being promoted as “The Epic Conclusion,” Villeneuve has said that he doesn’t see it as the completion of a trilogy. “First, it’s important that people understand that for me, it was really a diptych. It was really a pair of movies that will be the adaptation of the first book. That’s done and that’s finished. If I do a third one, which is in the writing process, it’s not like a trilogy. It’s strange to say that, but if I go back there, it’s to do something that feels different and has its own identity.” Villeneuve added that the story “takes place like 12 years after where we left the characters at the end of Part Two. Their journey, their story is different this time, and that’s why I always say that while it’s the same world it’s a new film with new circumstances.”

It does, however, “finish the Paul Atreides arc.

Dune: Part Three

JoBlo’s own Ryan Cultrera attended a special trailer launch event last night, where Zendaya, Anya Taylor-Joy, Javier Bardem, Robert Pattinson, and Denis Villeneuve stopped by for a moderated panel. Ryan provided the following quotes:

Denis on his return to the series after originally planning to step away for a while:

What happened was two things. When we released part one, it was at the end of the pandemic, I was not really in contact with the audience. And when we released part two, I received that wave of excitement and love from part one and people wanted to see part two. I mean, and when we screened the movie first in Mexico, there were some 14,000 people outside the theater and 5000 people inside. And it was that kind of, roller coaster like that around the world where we see an excitement. And I felt an appetite for the third movie that I was not expecting. As a filmmaker, you know, when you make a series of movies like you want in the relationship with the audience. And I felt a responsibility to finish the story. I had told the crew “that’s it, bye bye”. I went back home, but I kept awaking to those images, inspired by Dune Messiah. I was supposed to do another movie in the meantime, but the image kept coming back and kept coming back so I said “ok lets do it”

Denis on what has changed since 17 years have passed since the events of Dune Part Two:

The world changed in those years. The climate is different on Arrakis, still the desert planet. But there are differences. We are visiting new sets, new places. I brought the camera and areas of the planet that you guys have not seen before. And, you know, we are visiting on new planets as well. And I wanted to approach this with a new pair of eyes.

Denis on technical elements of shooting and seeing the movie in theaters:

We decided to shoot most of the movie on film. I have not shot on film in years. We shot the movie in 65mm. A big part of it was shot in Imax film. First time for me. But I kept the desert in digital because I like the brutality of the digital Imax. So the movie is really meant to be an Imax experience, and to be seen on the biggest screen as possible. Those are epic cameras. I mean, those are the best camera in the world. And it was like, when you see the result on screen, it’s quite unmatchable. Cinema is an artform that is meant to make you travel and to experience things that, you will not live in the regular life. I think as human beings, it’s important to share experiences, artworks, communal experiences. Our lives right now, we are like, in our little bubbles all around the world. And I think that theater brings us together. And I think it’s that there’s something beautifully beautiful and human about that. It’s very important.

Denis on Hans Zimmer coming back:

Hans is working on the music already and and scoring. Yes, yes, yes. But it’s going to be, like the movie is different, the score will be different. And it’s something that Hans is very excited about. And, approaching the, with the same spirit as the first films. I insist it’s a Dune movie, but it WILL be different. I want the audience to be shocked as to where we take the story.

Denis on Dune Messiah as inspiration for Dune Part Three:

Dune Messiah is by far my favorite book of the series. It’s a very dark, beautiful book. I will say this, it is my one of my most personal films if not my most personal film. I think that is very close to me and very contemporary. It’s the story of Paul and Chani, they’re struggling with their relationship, having the burden and incredible pressure from the world around them. And Paul is trying to find a way out of this cycle of violence. And there’s something about that with their love and their time and with their relationship, they evolve. That study on the relationship of both characters, that that is very personal.

Zendaya on having expanded screen time with Florence Pugh

Well, I want to start by saying I love Florence Pugh, who’s so talented and so wonderful in this world. And, I was just, we we said the last time the press tour, like, we only got, like, one scene together and we are far away. And I was like, I hope we get more. So I don’t want to, you know, tease anything. But she’s absolutely phenomenal. And, you know, we’ll just have to see for yourselves what happens. Because it’s, yeah, quite the journey.

Zendaya was asked if she and Paul have kids in this movie. Javier Bardem chimes in:

I AM her kid! Twist!

Javier Bardem on his character’s loyalty to Paul and where that brings him:

Well, I think it takes him to a place where, he sees different realities of what being empowered means after so long. He’s in this contradiction between the loyalty to the idea that he strongly fought and believed back in the day, and also the result of the idea becoming something that he thinks or feels may not be the one he dreamt about. Sounds complicated, but also is a complicated book. But what I mean, it’s a great analogy about the idea of power and having the power.

Anya Taylor Joy on her new character, Alia:

Alia has a very intense blessing-curse situation. She carries the weight and the wisdom of generations and generations in her head. She’s never in a singular conversation. It’s kind of everything everywhere, all at once. The one thing that she really feels most strongly about is her love and devotion to her brother, because that’s the only person who’s ever made her feel like she makes sense. He’s understood her from before she was even born, and she will do anything for him to various degrees of insanity.

Robert Pattinson on joining Dune:

I absolutely adored these movies. I saw them multiple times in theaters. I just think it’s such a towering achievement and the cast is so incredible. And, I just think everybody wants to work with Denis, he’s a master. When you see the scope and scale and ambition of these movies, like on set, you get why they feel like this on the screen. It’s just like an extraordinary and amazing experience.

Robert Pattinson on his character, Scytale:

I mean, he’s an unusual character in the book. I mean, you can’t really tell who’s side he’s on. It’s kind of what makes it quite interesting. wouldn’t say it’s conventional. It’s an extremely fun character to play. The look for it is for the most extraordinary.

Denis on bringing back Duncan Idaho:

Frank Herbert. Genius. The idea is that, I think he created that kind of tremendous, charismatic character that. Our heart was broken, seeing him falling in the first one. We have the desire to see him back. And he comes back just at the right moment in the story. And it’s like a very, very important comeback. Paul is struggling with his identity, and having that kind of strong previous figure coming back from the past will have a tremendous impact. That’s what I will say.

Timothée Chalamet may have walked away empty-handed at the Academy Awards last night, but who needs an Oscar when you can rule the universe? The actor has dropped a first look at Paul Atreides in Dune: Part Three on social media, with the character looking a little worse for wear. Check that out below! Update: Some more character posters have dropped, and it’s been confirmed that a teaser trailer will debut tomorrow morning.

Not Quite A Trilogy Finale

Villeneuve returned to helm Dune: Part Three, but he isn’t viewing it as the completion of a trilogy. “First, it’s important that people understand that for me, it was really a diptych,” Villeneuve said. “It was really a pair of movies that will be the adaptation of the first book. That’s done and that’s finished. If I do a third one, which is in the writing process, it’s not like a trilogy. Dunesday

Dune: Part Three is slated to hit theaters on December 18, which also happens to be the release of Avengers: Doomsday, one of the most highly anticipated films of the year. Unless one of them blinks, we could have another Barbenheimer on our hands.

The Dune sequel does have an edge, as Warner Bros. has secured a three-week IMAX exclusivity window for the film, which leaves Doomsday out of luck on the biggest screens in the country… at least for a few weeks.

December 18 (aka Dunesday) Could Be the Biggest Box Office Showdown Ever

The biggest box office showdown in cinematic history will likely take place on December 18. That’s the day Disney releases its make-or-break MCU epic Avengers: Doomsday, while Warner Bros unleashes Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi juggernaut Dune: Part Three.

While Robert Downey Jr. and Timothée Chalamet recently had some fun with the clash—branding it “Dunesday”—it’s still highly unusual for tentpoles of this scale to open on the same day. Traditionally, studios avoid this kind of direct collision because, in theory, there can only be one “winner.”

That said, history shows it’s not always a zero-sum game.

When Massive Movies Open on the Same Day, Everyone Can Still Win

I remember being a teenager when Titanic and the James Bond sequel Tomorrow Never Dies opened on the same day. Titanic went on to become the biggest movie of all time, but Tomorrow Never Dies still turned a healthy profit.

More recently, the so-called “Barbenheimer” phenomenon—when Barbie and Oppenheimer debuted simultaneously—proved that competing blockbusters can actually fuel each other’s success. Both films became cultural events and massive box office hits.

Why Dune: Part Three Has a Major Advantage Over Avengers: Doomsday

While most people assume Avengers: Doomsday will inevitably outgross Dune: Part Three, Villeneuve’s sequel has something Disney doesn’t: exclusive access to IMAX screens.

Despite expectations that Doomsday would follow recent MCU entries with a major IMAX rollout, it appears that Dune: Part Three—shot extensively with IMAX cameras—has reportedly secured a three-week IMAX exclusivity window. That’s a significant win for Warner Bros.

IMAX has steadily grown in popularity, and an IMAX release isn’t just about ticket premiums—it adds cultural cachet and reinforces a film’s “must-see” status.

IMAX Formats: How the Two Films Compare

Both movies will still benefit from IMAX branding, but in very different ways:

  • Dune: Part Three is expected to follow its predecessor, with sequences framed for the full IMAX 1.43:1 aspect ratio.
  • Avengers: Doomsday, reportedly shot in a standard 2.39:1 ratio, will likely receive a custom IMAX version that expands to 1.90:1—similar to releases like F1.

While Doomsday will still look impressive in premium formats, Dune’s native IMAX photography gives it a clear edge with cinephiles.

As it stands, both films are still locked into December 18—but I have a hard time believing they’ll ultimately go head-to-head.

Avengers: Doomsday feels firmly planted, with its entire marketing campaign built around that date. If one movie moves, Dune: Part Three seems the more likely candidate. A shift to March 2027—the same window that worked so well for Dune: Part Two—would make a lot of strategic sense.

For now, though, we wait. If the date holds, December 18 aka “Dunesday” could become one of the most fascinating box office experiments Hollywood has ever seen.

Some cliche somewhere said that ‘a picture is worth a thousand words.’ This has proven to be the case for me and especially when it comes to fan art. I have always sought out great fan art and have wanted to share it with as many people as possible. “Awesome Art” is the outlet for that passion. In this column, I will showcase the kick-ass artwork of some great artists, with the hopes that these artists get the attention they deserve. That’s the aim. If you have any questions or comments, or even suggestions of art or other great artists, feel free to contact me at any time at theodorebond@joblo.com.

Tyler

2025 ended up being a pretty decent year for movies, with some true standouts like Marty Supreme, Weapons, and Hamnet. But with the sun setting on 2025, it’s time to look forward to the films being released in 2026. And boy are there a lot of sequels and adaptations. I suppose that’s just the nature of modern day cinema and that’s not to say that there won’t be some original films that really blow us away this year. But those tend to be a bit more under the radar until closer to release. Even still, I’m pretty excited for many releases this year and think that we should be in store for some great additions to already established franchises. So let’s take a look at some of the upcoming movies in 2026.

And don’t forget to check out our 2026 Horror Preview as well!

wuthering heights

Wuthering Heights (February 13th)

Emerald Fennell has really made quite the impact with films like Promising Young Woman and Saltburn. Now it’s time for her to adapt one of the most famous novels out there with Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights. It is “A passionate and tumultuous love story set against the backdrop of the Yorkshire moors, exploring the intense and destructive relationship between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw.” Pairing Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi seems like the work of some mad genius. The Valentine’s Day release is sure to make this one another win for Fennell.

crime 101

Crime 101 (February 13)

Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, and Halle Berry star in this action-thriller based on the work of Don Winslow (writer of Savages). Directed by Bart Layton, whose American Animals was quite the Sundance gem eight years back, this is the kind of adrenaline-charged original fare you don’t get too often in theaters anymore. Here’s the synopsis:

Set against the sun-bleached grit of Los Angeles, CRIME 101 weaves the tale of an elusive thief (Chris Hemsworth) whose high-stakes heists unfolding along the iconic 101 freeway have mystified police. When he eyes the score of a lifetime with hopes of this being his final job, his path collides with a disillusioned insurance broker (Halle Berry) who is facing her own crossroads, forcing the two to collaborate. Determined to crack the case, a relentless detective (Mark Ruffalo) closes in on the operation, raising the stakes even higher. As the multimillion-dollar heist approaches, the line between hunter and hunted begins to blur, and all three are forced to confront the cost of their choices–and the realization that there’s no turning back.

project hail mary

Project Hail Mary (March 20th)

Andy Weir writes some of the most interesting science fiction of the modern era and it’s been far too long since we got an adaptation of one of his other big works, The Martian. The story involves: “Science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship light years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction… but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone.” While the trailer gave away a little much for my liking, it’s hard to count against Ryan Gosling in the entertainment department.

disclosure day

Disclosure Day (June 12th)

I’m still not sold on the title, but it’s hard not to be excited at the concept of Steven Spielberg returning to the world of Aliens with this UFO thriller. With a cast that includes Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Wyatt Russell and Colman Domingo, this look very intriguing. Plot details are still pretty scant but it looks more in line with Close Encounters than War of the Worlds.

Toy Story 5

Toy Story 5 (June 12th)

It’s always interesting to see what new obstacles the filmmakers manage to put in the way of our favorite toys, and the plot for Toy Story 5 seems like a long time coming: “Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the rest of the gang’s jobs are challenged when they’re introduced to electronics, a new threat to playtime.” With all the main cast returning, plus fun additions like Conan O’Brien, it’ll be nice to see another story within this world. While the third entry provided the perfect ending, the fourth proved that there’s still some juice left in the tank, and I’m excited to see what they do with this one.

supergirl

Supergirl (June 26th, 2026)

The second film in James Gunn’s DCU has some pretty high expectations going in. But if Superman was any indication, we’re in for a much less gloomy version of a Superhero movie. And while we just got a taste of her last year, this origin story should give us a better overall picture of what Supes’ cousin has been up to. Plus, it’s going to be awesome to see Jason Momoa’s Lobo chomp on a cigar in a role that he was born to play.

the odyssey

The Odyssey (July 17th)

I’m not sure if there’s any other film releasing that has the level of hype of this film. With opening day showings already being sold out for the last 6 months, there’s nothing quite like a Christopher Nolan movie. For those that never had to read the book in school, The Odyssey “After the Trojan War, Odysseus faces a dangerous voyage back to Ithaca, meeting creatures like the Cyclops Polyphemus, Sirens, and Circe along the way.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day (July 31st)

There’s a certain excitement to any new Spider-man moving coming out and, thankfully, we’ve never been too many years without one. With Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton taking over behind the camera, it’ll be interesting to see what he brings to the table. Even more exciting is that this should be putting Spidey more street level and allow us to see him less MCU-afied. Though, it’s hard to say since this will also be featuring a tons of other characters like Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, Jon Bernthal’s Punisher and Sadie Sink’s mystery character. Here’s hoping they allow the character to be a bit more independent and less reliant on what’s going on with the rest of the MCU.

the social reckoning

The Social Reckoning (October 9th)

I would have never expected there to be a sequel to David Fincher’s The Social Network yet here we are. And honestly? I’m actually pretty intrigued. A lot has happened in the world of Mark Zuckerberg since the creation of Facebook and it will be interesting to see how writer Aaron Sorkin (who is now taking over directing duties) presents the story which follows “Frances Haugen, a young Facebook engineer, who enlisted the help of Jeff Horwitz, a Wall Street Journal reporter, to blow the whistle on the social network’s most guarded secrets.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise of the Reaping (November 20th)

I’ve been pretty let down by many of the films in the Hunger Game series so when I tell you this one has me excited, just know that I’m a hard sell for these. But having read the book that this one is based, this is easily the best story yet and I can’t wait to see some of these scenes come to life. The casting has been perfect and it’ll be great to see Haymitch’s time in the games. Plus, it’s cool that they were able to get Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson back, even if it’s likely just a bookends role, where Harrelson’s Haymitch is likely telling them his story. Either way Sunrise of the Reaping “Explores Panem 24 years before Katniss’ saga, starting on the morning of the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games, where a young Haymitch Abernathy participates.

Avengers Doomsday (December 18th)

It seems like just about everyone who’s ever put on a supersuit is returning for Doomsday, not to mention Robert Downey Jr, whose Tony Stark famously died in the last Avengers teamup. Whether it’s Marvel calling a hail mary and trying to save the MCU is irrelevant if they’re able to pull off a massive spectacle that brings in the money. And they’re doing a great job of building that hype already as there have already been multiple teaser trailers (four revealing different characters returning). The story appears to feature Doctor Doom going after the children of famous superheroes, causing them to all band together to try and take him out. We’ve even got the OG X-Men returning.

Dune 4, Denis Villeneuve

Dune Part Three (December 18th)

Part of me thinks that Dune is going to move at some point to avoid Doomsday. I just can’t imagine it competing with a behemoth like an Avengers film, but I guess crazier things have been done. We’re still following Timothy Chalamet’s Paul Atreides but given how crazy the source material gets, I’ll be curious to see how it translates to a movie, as it’s always felt pretty unadaptable. Though, if anyone can do it, I’m sure Denis Villeneuve is up to the task.

For years, Awesome Art We’ve Found Around The Net has been about two things only – awesome art and the artists that create it. With that in mind, we thought why not take the first week of the month to showcase these awesome artists even more Welcome to “Awesome Artist We’ve Found Around The Net. In this column, we are focusing on one artist and the awesome art that they create, whether they be amateur, up and coming, or well established. The goal is to uncover these artists so even more people become familiar with them. We ask these artists a few questions to see their origins, influences, and more. If you are an awesome artist or know someone that should be featured, feel free to contact me at any time at theodorebond@joblo.com.This month we are very pleased to bring you the awesome art of…

Huan Do is a senior creative lead, art director, and artist known for crafting bold, concept-driven visuals. He has a particular focus on original tribute poster work, guided by storytelling sensibility and a designer’s eye. A UCLA graduate in Graphic Design, his work spans theatrical, streaming, and home entertainment campaigns, where he approaches key art as a narrative device – distilling character, tone, and emotion into a single, striking image.

Working fluidly across studio and freelance environments, Huan blends strategic thinking with a hands-on design process, transforming ideas into finished visual experiences. His work is defined by clarity, precision, and cinematic intent, rooted in the pursuit of compelling compositions and original concepts. The result is art that feels purposeful, cohesive, and built to resonate with audiences long after the first impression.

JOBLO: What got you started as an artist?
HUAN:
I think I always had a deep appreciation for art, even as a child. I was pretty introverted then – and still am – and art gave me a way to escape into a world where imagination felt limitless. It was a quiet, personal space where I could explore ideas freely, and creating was simply fun. That interest became something more tangible when I took an oil painting class in junior high. At the time, it was the only school in our area offering a course like that, and working with paint, color, and composition really clicked for me. From that point on, I was hooked.

It wasn’t until college, though, that things really started to take shape. I began taking design classes, and that’s when the seed was planted that maybe this wasn’t just something I enjoyed – it could actually be a path. Learning about layout, typography, and visual problem-solving opened my eyes to the idea of becoming a graphic artist and communicating ideas through design.

Naturally, my love for cinema eventually found its way into my work. Film had always been a huge influence on me, and discovering that I could fuse those two passions – art and cinema – into a single discipline felt incredibly exciting. It gave me the opportunity to explore focal points, interpretation, mood, and visual experimentation all at once.

Who were some of your favorite artists growing up?
Growing up, I was always interested in artists who blurred the line between illustration and design. Patrick Nagel was a huge influence on me – his stylized portraits of women just felt so modern, even while pulling from styles like Art Nouveau and traditional Japanese woodcuts. I really connected with how clean and assured his compositions were, and how he could strip things down to just what was necessary. That way of thinking about clarity and impact definitely stuck with me.

I was also a big fan of Guy Billout. His illustrations were always clever and plenty whimsical, and they made you look at everyday situations from totally unexpected angles. There was always this effortless sense of humor and imagination in his work that I really admired.

Looking back, both of them helped shape how I see illustration and design – not just as something that looks good, but as something that’s concept-driven and thoughtful. That influence still shows up in how I approach my own work today.

Who do you really dig these days, follow on Instagram?
There’s so much incredible art out there right now that it’s honestly hard to narrow things down, but a few artists I really admire and consistently follow definitely stand out.

At the top of my list is Bruno Vergauwen. His work feels next level – his compositions, and cinematic interpretations are incredibly unique. I really admire how he weaves his technique so seamlessly into his take on film; every piece feels thoughtfully constructed.

I’m also a big fan of Laurent Durieux. His posters are always clever and conceptually sharp, and he’s worked on many of my all-time favorite classic films. There’s a timeless quality to his work that makes each piece feel iconic.

Orlando Arocena (Mexifunk) is another standout. His mastery of vector art is undeniable, and his horror work in particular is phenomenal. His steel book series is some of the best genre artwork out there – bold, and instantly recognizable.

I always look forward to new releases from Eileen Steinbach (sg_posters) as well. Her designs are incredibly smart, with a strong minimalist flair that communicates so much depth through simplicity.

Ian Permana is another artist I follow closely; his use of bright, neon-heavy color palettes creates striking, energetic compositions that really command attention.

Seb Ruiz (brgrface) is also someone whose work I greatly admire. Her expert line work and sophisticated use of color translate beautifully across a wide range of projects, showcasing both technical mastery and versatility. Her art is simply gorgeous.

I’m also really inspired by Jeff Jacobs (retro1sheet), especially his ability to transform static artwork into animated pieces. Watching his art come to life adds an entirely new dimension that’s just extremely fun to explore.

On the fine art side, I’m currently obsessed with the paintings of Inka Essenhigh. Her ethereal imagery – blending natural forms with imagined elements – creates these otherworldly landscapes that feel both exotic and deeply symbolic. Her work is endlessly inspiring and unlike anything else, so yeah… I pretty much get lost in the fantastic realms that she creates.

What advice would you have for budding artists today?
In today’s creative landscape – where there are countless incredibly talented and already established artists – it’s more important than ever to develop a clear, personal point of view. Finding your own unique style can help you stand out, even if it starts with something simple that clearly differentiates your work from the next artist’s. That sense of identity is what makes your art recognizable and memorable.

It can take time to get there, and that process isn’t always easy – but that’s part of the challenge, and honestly, part of the fun. Experimenting, working through iterations, and steadily refining your voice is how that style begins to take shape. The key is to stay curious and open while trusting your instincts along the way.

Most importantly, keep pushing forward with your work. In many cases, you have to be relentless – show up consistently, keep creating even when momentum feels slow, and believe in the value of what you’re making. Persistence, combined with authenticity, can go a long way in carving out your own space as an artist.

What should we be looking out for from you in the future?
You can expect a continued expansion of my alternative movie poster work, especially across several ongoing series I’ve been building – Horror Thriller, Crime Thriller, and most recently, Sci-Fi Thriller. Each series allows me to explore a distinct visual language while pushing atmosphere, symbolism, and mood in different ways.

I love the freedom that comes with being an alternative movie poster artist. It’s about taking iconic films and reimagining them in bold, visually striking ways while staying true to the core mood of each genre. Each series is its own visual universe, and my goal is to keep pushing the scale, the atmosphere, and the impact of the artwork.

Moving forward, I’ll be continuing to grow these series while evolving their visual identity, along with new explorations as inspiration strikes. My hope is to bring an audience along for the journey – people who enjoy seeing familiar films reimagined through a cinematic, design-forward lens and who appreciate thoughtful, expressive artwork.

Being a fansite, we have to ask you… What are some of your favorite movies/TV shows of all time?
I’m naturally drawn to films that explore the human spirit – stories of lost love, new beginnings, and characters shaped by imperfect choices and attempts at redemption.

At the very top of my list is Love Me If You Dare (2003), directed by Yann Samuell and starring Marion Cotillard and Guillaume Canet. It’s a brilliant French dark romantic comedy – To me, the film balances whimsical charm and emotional danger, ending on the quiet notion that some loves persist, no matter how flawed the path.

Another favorite is The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988), directed by Philip Kaufman and based on Milan Kundera’s novel. It has always stayed with me for its meditation on love, freedom, and impermanence. It captures how desire and intimacy can feel both weightless and deeply consequential, and that emotional tension is what makes the film so great. Robert Redford’s Ordinary People (1980) is another standout – a quietly devastating exploration of grief and family trauma. In a similar vein, Wim Wenders’ Paris,Texas (1984) and Wings of Desire (1987) explore those same emotional themes with a calm sensitivity that resonated deeply with me.

My favorite crime thriller of all time is Michael Mann’s Heat (1995). Beyond its iconic performances, it’s a fascinating study of two opposing forces – men driven by discipline, code, and obsession – making it as much a character study as it is a genre classic. A close second is The Mechanic (1972). Charles Bronson as a hitman is just so good – cold, methodical, and packed with that raw, gritty action that still hits hard. When it comes to neo-noir thrillers, Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive (2011) is a winner for me – an incredibly stylish and stunning piece of filmmaking. Curtis Hanson’s L.A. Confidential (1997) feels like a perfect film – an immersive world that blends classic crime drama with the nostalgia of a bygone golden era.

Of course, I’ll watch anything from Quentin Tarantino – Kill Bill Vol. 1 (2003) & Vol. 2 (2004), Pulp Fiction (1994), and Inglorious Basterds (2009) are my top picks – films that showcase bold storytelling, creative dialog, and unmistakable style. They’re confident, unapologetic, and endlessly entertaining.
On the other end of the spectrum, I have a deep appreciation for science fiction and horror. Ridley Scott’s Alien (1979) is always thrilling, and Blade Runner (1982) remains one of my all-time favorites for its landmark world-building and art direction. Rogue One (2016) from the Star Wars universe absolutely delivers, especially that heart-pounding finale. I also enjoy a good vampire story, so Tomas Alfredson’s Let the Right One In (2008) immediately comes to mind – haunting, intimate, and beautifully shot. Smile 2 (2024) is absolutely worth calling out – Naomi Scott delivers a fearless, fully committed performance that sears. And of course, John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982) was absolutely mind-blowing the first time I saw it; his mastery of suspense, paranoia, and practical effects is simply unmatched.

I’m also a big fan of Asian cinema, where the creative range feels especially diverse and where some truly remarkable films can be found. Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), and Zhang Yimou’s House of Flying Daggers (2004) stand out for their visual poetry, emotional depth, and elegance – traits that elevate them far beyond traditional martial arts films. John Woo’s Hard Boiled (1992) is relentless, over-the-top action at its finest – always exciting to watch. I also love Park Chan-wook’s Vengeance Trilogy (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002), Oldboy (2003), and Lady Vengeance (2005)) because it’s just so uncompromising in its brutality and sharp exploration of morality and obsession. And then there’s Stephen Chow’s Kung Fu Hustle (2005), which is just pure fun – wild, inventive, and completely unhinged in the best way.

I also gravitate toward films from the 1970’s – The Deer Hunter, Taxi Driver, Apocalypse Now, The Godfather, The Warriors, Deliverance, Marathon Man, Mad Max, The Exorcist, and Saturday Night Fever, in particular – a period where filmmaking felt raw, grounded, and unfiltered.
Overall, my tastes are pretty diverse. As long as a film is engaging, thoughtfully made, and willing to take creative risks, I’m in.

It’s another Chalamet Christmas

After holiday releases like Wonka from two years ago, last year’s A Complete Unknown and the upcoming Marty Supreme, Timothée Chalamet is becoming something of a Christmas tradition. Additionally, Chalamet is getting love for his performance in Marty Supereme with a Golden Globe nomination. Our Chris Bumbray also loved the movie, as he said in his review, “For me, it’s the movie of the year, and if film as a form seems to be dying off, at least there are guys like Safdie around who still deserve their place in the pantheon of great directors.”

A New Look for Dune: Part Three

Recently, Chalamet appeared on The Graham Norton Show to promote Marty Supreme and as the young star sports a new look without his signature long, flowing locks, he reveals it’s for the new characterization of Paul Atreides in Dune: Part Three. However, he also revealed that he begged director Denis Villeneuve not to cut his hair so short. Host Graham Norton broached the subject, asking what happened to the “Chalamet locks.” Chalamet replied, “They’re all gone. They’ve been stolen.”

He would then explain,

It was for a film. For Dune: Part Three. And there’s supposed to be a nice character shift. And I’m playing 15 – 20 years older. So, we did a 3 millimeter haircut, I think it’s called. The director wanted more — a 1.5. Then, we did one. And I begged him. I said, ‘Please, please…’ Cause you know…our hair, weirdly we’re all attached. It’s kind of like our personality. These follicles that grow out of our heads.”

Emma Thompson, who was also a guest that night, alluded to Samson from the story of Samson and Delilah, whose strength came from his hair. To which Chalamet admitted he was not familiar with the story.

What we know about Dune: Part Three

Timothée Chalamet has returned as Paul Atreides, alongside Zendaya as Chani, Florence as Princess Irulan, Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia Atreides. Nakoa-Wolf Momoa and Ida Brooke are playing Leto II and Ghanima, the twin children of Paul and Chani.

Villeneuve has returned to helm Dune: Part Three, but he isn’t viewing it as the completion of a trilogy. “First, it’s important that people understand that for me, it was really a diptych,” Villeneuve said. “It was really a pair of movies that will be the adaptation of the first book. That’s done and that’s finished. If I do a third one, which is in the writing process, it’s not like a trilogy. It’s strange to say that, but if I go back there, it’s to do something that feels different and has its own identity.” Villeneuve added that the story “takes place like 12 years after where we left the characters at the end of Part Two. Their journey, their story is different this time, and that’s why I always say that while it’s the same world it’s a new film with new circumstances.” He also confirmed that it “will finish the Paul Atreides arc.“

Near the beginning of the year, there were rumblings that Robert Pattinson would be joining the cast of Dune: Part Three, but very little in the way of confirmation. Now, the actor has finally broken his silence. While chatting with Jennifer Lawrence for IndieWire, Pattinson mentioned filming in the desert for the Dune sequel.

When I was doing ‘Dune’ it was so hot in the desert that I just couldn’t question anything,” Pattinson said. “And it was so relaxing, like my brain actually wasn’t operating, I did not have a single functioning brain cell. And I was just listening to Denis [Villeneuve]: ‘Whatever you want!’

Pattinson’s role hasn’t been officially confirmed, but he’s believed to be playing a character known as Scytale, a key figure in the conspiracy to overthrow Paul Atreides.

Pattinson will soon be seen starring alongside Jennifer Lawrence in Die My Love, a new film from Lynne Ramsay. The film follows Grace and Jackson, a young couple who move to rural Montana in search of a quieter life. However, they have trouble adjusting to their new surroundings and becoming parents, with Grace’s feelings of isolation and psychological distress driving their marriage into unsettling and unpredictable territory. Die My Love will be released on November 7.

Jason Momoa is preparing to return as Duncan Idaho in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three, but he’s had to do something most of us who regularly sport facial hair hate doing: shaving.

The actor took to Instagram to show himself going clean-shaven for the first time in six years. His reaction is very relatable: “Goddamnit, I hate it.

Only for you, Denis,” Momoa said, expressing his willingness to do anything for the Dune director.

Duncan Idaho, the swordmaster of House Atreides, was featured in the first Dune movie, and those who have read Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah know how the character will return. The upcoming sequel will also be a bit of a family affair, as Momoa’s son, Nakoa-Wolf Momoa, has joined the cast as Leto II, one of the twin children of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) and Chani (Zendaya).

At the red carpet premiere of Chief of War, his soon-to-be-released series on Apple TV+, Momoa seemed very proud of his son. “This kid…I’m like ‘What the hell?’ ‘No, you can’t act.’ ‘No, you’re not gonna be in this.’ ‘No, no, no,’” he said. “And then, he literally…he did it on his own. Listen, he is gonna be way better than I have ever been. So, I’m like, ‘That’s what you want for your children.’ He will be. He’ll be a force.

Villeneuve will be back to helm Dune: Part Three, but he isn’t viewing it as the completion of a trilogy. “First, it’s important that people understand that for me, it was really a diptych,” Villeneuve said. “It was really a pair of movies that will be the adaptation of the first book. Despite Jason Momoa sitting out Dune: Part Two for obvious reasons, he is also confirmed for a return to the sandy universe for the now officially titled Dune: Part Three“Well, I’m not sure if I’m going to get in trouble or not,” Momoa told Craig Melvin of Today“But it’s the same thing like Game of Thrones, you know what I mean? If you didn’t read the books, it’s not my fault, right?… Yeah, I’m going to be coming back.“ Although Duncan Idaho was killed off in the first movie, fans of Frank Herbert’s novels will know that the character does reappear.

It was also recently revealed that Momoa’s son, who sports the awesome name of Nakoa-Wolf Momoa, has also joined the cast of Dune: Part Three as Leto II, one of the twin children of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) and Chani (Zendaya). Entertainment Tonight got to catch up with Jason Momoa on the red carpet of his upcoming show, Chief of War for Apple TV+, when he reacted to a question of his son’s casting in the Denis Villeneuve film. Momoa was glowing with pride as he said,

This kid…I’m like ‘What the hell?’ ‘No, you can’t act.’ ‘No, you’re not gonna be in this.’ ‘No, no, no.’ And then, he literally…he did it on his own. Listen, he is gonna be way better than I have ever been. So, I’m like, ‘That’s what you want for your children.’ He will be. He’ll be a force.”

The reporter then joked about how Momoa shooed his son away from him during interviews on the red carpet. Momoa joked, “I can just hear him and I’m going like, ‘Go away.’ He’s loud like his father, so…we have that in common.”

Momoa stars, writes, and executive produces Chief of War. Set amidst the beautiful backdrop of the islands of Hawai’i, the nine-episode series, based on true events, follows warrior Ka’iana, portrayed by Momoa, as he tries to unify the islands before Western colonization in the late 18th century. Chief of War will make its global debut on Apple TV+ with the first two episodes on Friday, August 1, followed by new episodes every Friday through September 19.

Dune: Part Two was released in March of 2024 and conquered the box office with over $700 million global total. Dune 3 sees Villeneuve adapting Frank Herbert’s third book in the trilogy, Dune: Messiah, bringing Paul Atreides’ story to its end. While it was naturally assumed that the third Dune, whose source material would come from Messiah, would sport that title, Variety announces that Denis Villeneuve will keep the title continuity simple and officially call the next one Dune: Part Three.

Additionally, while Villeneuve hasn’t yet achieved the stature to film the entire movie with IMAX cameras like Christopher Nolan will with The Odyssey, there will be sequences that will be filmed with the special format cameras.

While Denis Villeneuve has been keeping much of what Dune: Part Three will hold secret, he did tease that Chani (Zendaya) will have even more character development, especially given how things were left in Dune: Part Two. However, we do of course know how the book goes, as it was published nearly 60 years ago. As for that more specific plot: “Dune Messiah continues the story of Paul Atreides, better known-and feared-as the man christened Muad’Dib. And even as House Atreides begins to crumble around him from the machinations of his enemies, the true threat to Paul comes to his lover, Chani, and the unborn heir to his family’s dynasty.”

The career of Villeneuve is gaining even more high-profile projects as he was just named the new director of the next James Bond reboot. “Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since ‘Dr. No’ with Sean Connery. I’m a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he’s sacred territory,” said Villeneuve in a statement. “I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor. Amy, David, and I are absolutely thrilled to bring him back to the screen. Thank you to Amazon MGM Studios for their trust.“
