Drew Goddard has been attached to write and direct The Matrix 5 for several years, but we’ve heard very little about the project during that time. Several weeks ago, he confirmed that the fifth installment is still in the works, but he had a little more to say in a recent chat with Variety.

“I can’t say too much, because we’re still in the stage of writing it,” Goddard told the outlet. “I need to give myself space to find the best story. I think the approach will be the way I approach anything, which is, do I love it? And I love what Lana and Lilly Wachowski did with those movies. They mean so much to me and I feel like they’ve had a profound impact on my creative voice. I take this responsibility very seriously. I feel the weight of wanting to do right by the fans, wanting to do right by the creators and wanting to do right for myself as a fan.“
Goddard has been busy with other projects, such as Project Hail Mary, but it seems The Matrix 5 might be taking longer than expected to get right. We don’t even know if this will be a fresh take on the story, or if Keanu Reeves and any other members of the original cast will return. In response to that very question, Goddard simply said, “I can’t speak to that.“
The Matrix Resurrections
The long-awaited fourth film in the franchise, The Matrix Resurrections, was released in 2021, but unfortunately, it was a box office bomb and received mixed reviews. I’ll give it some slack as it was released during the pandemic, but it’s easy to see how fans were let down by the sequel. However, Goddard was a fan of the film and doesn’t know why it didn’t resonate as strongly as the other installments.
“I don’t know,” he said. “It certainly resonated with me. When I watched the movie, I was deeply moved. It may be the most emotional of the of the four. I know it got caught up in the COVID times and it was when Warner Bros. was putting everything on streaming.“
