A24 revealed the trailer to the film online a few months ago, but now a teaser trailer for an accompanying album has been released. While the plot isn’t fully unveiled, the marketing tells us that despite the scary imagery, it’s not a ghost story. Also, despite the tension between our two leads, it’s not a love story. The story heavily involves a fictional pop star and this new album is a tie-in companion piece for the movie.

The film is being described as a psychosexual pop thriller and stars Academy Award-winner Anne Hathaway, Michaela Coel, Hunter Schafer, Atheena Frizzell, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Alba Baptista, Isaura Barbé-Brown, with Sian Clifford and FKA Twigs. The movie also features original music performed by Anne Hathaway and written and produced by Jack Antonoff, Charli xcx, and FKA Twigs.

The brief synopsis (which looks like fine-print on the press release) reads, “Long-buried wounds rise to the surface when iconic pop star Mother Mary (Anne Hathaway) reunites with her estranged best friend and former costume designer Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel) on the eve of her comeback performance.”

While not much about the plot is formally announced, a lot of the movie looks to be contained in an intimate location. According to World of Reel, based on test reactions, “Most of the film keeps them arguing in a barn, with only brief performance shots. Hunter Schafer appears as Coel’s assistant for about ten minutes.” It was also reported that the movie was called “bewildering” by one viewer. Word is that not much happens as it’s a “movie about nothing.” Additionally, last year, at the Melbourne International Film Festival, Lowery himself gave a rare update, and he sounded just about as confused as the audience screening his film. Reportedly, he “sighed deeply” and called it “a weird, weird film.”

There is yet to be a specific date locked down for the movie, but the marketing states it will hit theaters in April 2026.

The Green Knight director David Lowery is reteaming with A24 for his next feature Mother Mary. Lowery directs from a script he wrote with Anne Hathaway (The Dark Knight Rises, Rachel Getting Married) and Michaela Coel (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, I May Destroy You) leading the cast.

According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, Mother Mary is an “epic pop melodrama following a fictional musician (Hathaway) and her relationship with an iconic fashion designer (Coel).” Lowery, Toby Halbrooks, and James M. Johnston produce with Jeanie Igoe of Homebird Productions and Jonas Katzenstein. Maximilian Leo and Jonathan Saubach of Filmproduktion also produce. The musically-charged project will feature original songs written and arranged by Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX, with an original score by Daniel Hart.

Hathaway is prepping multiple projects in post-production, including The Idea of You and Mother’s Instinct. Hathaway plays Sophie in The Idea of You. The story revolves around a 40-year-old divorced mother who braves the heat to go with her daughter to Coachella after her dad cancels his trip with his 15-year-old. There, she meets the lead singer of a band, and shenanigans ensue. For Mother’s Instinct, Hathway stars alongside Jessica Chastain as Celine and Alice, respectively. The duo lives a traditional lifestyle with successful husbands and sons of the same age. Life’s perfect harmony shatters after a tragic accident. Guilt, suspicion, and paranoia combine to unravel their sisterly bond.

After starring in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and the series I May Destroy You and Chewing Gum, Michaela Cole is filming the new Mr. and Mrs. Smith television series. The show stars Donald Glover (Atlanta, Community) and Maya Erskine (PEN 15, Obi-Wan Kenobi), with Tuari Wright, Sid Jarvis, and Katrina Canillas. The series is an adaptation of the 2005 action film about married spies.

With Lowery behind the camera, Mother Mary could be a visually splendiferous saga about fame, glamour, and the complicated relationships we forge while trying to remain at the top of the game. I’d like to know what type of relationship Hathaway and Coel’s respective characters will have in Lowery’s new film. Color me intrigued and eager to learn more as this project develops.
