Brotherhood of the Wolf and Silent Hill director Christophe Gans’ new Silent Hill movie Return to Silent Hill, which is said to be “totally independent from the two previous movies,” reached theatres near the end of January, and you can read the 6/10 review JoBlo’s own Tyler Nichols gave the film at THIS LINK. One month later, Return to Silent Hill has now been given a digital release. The movie can be viewed on Prime Video, where it’s available to rent for $9.99 or to purchase for $19.99.

Cast and Synopsis

Gans directed the 2006 version of Silent Hill from a screenplay he wrote with Roger Avary and Nicolas Boukhrief, and directed this new film from a screenplay he wrote with Sandra Vo-Anh and Will Schneider. Based on the video game Silent Hill 2Return to Silent Hill follows James, a man broken after being separated from his one true love. When a mysterious letter calls him back to Silent Hill in search of her, he finds a once-recognizable town transformed by an unknown evil. As James descends deeper into the darkness, he encounters terrifying figures both familiar and new and begins to question his own sanity as he struggles to make sense of reality and hold on long enough to save his lost love.

The film stars Jeremy Irvine (Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again) and Hannah Emily Anderson (Jigsaw).

Statements

Return to Silent Hill was produced by Victor Hadida, Molly Hassell, and David Wulf.

When the project was heading into production, Gans provided the following statement: “Return to Silent Hill is a mythological love story about someone so deeply in love, they’re willing to go to Hell to save someone. I’m delighted to have the wonderful talents of both Jeremy Irvine and Hannah Emily Anderson take us on this journey into a psychological horror world that I hope will both satisfy and surprise fans of Silent Hill.

Hadida added: “Christophe and I have been working closely with our partners at KONAMI, as they update the video game, to also create a version of Silent Hill for the theatrical audiences of today. You will still find the iconic monsters – but there will also be new designs. We are confident that this new film and KONAMI’s updated game together will propel the Silent Hill franchise forward for years to come.

Twenty years after first bringing Silent Hill to the big screen, director Christophe Gans has returned with Return to Silent Hill, a new installment loosely inspired by the franchise’s iconic second game. Unfortunately, the reception hasn’t been kind, with both critics and fans largely underwhelmed by the latest trip to the fog-shrouded town. Even so, Gans doesn’t appear discouraged, even saying he’d love to come back for a Return to Silent Hill sequel.

Christophe Gans Wants More Silent Hill

If I have the opportunity, we’ll come back to ‘Silent Hill’ once more,” Gans told Variety. “I’m not looking at ‘Silent Hill’ only as a great video game. I’m looking at it as a piece of modern art. It has something really edgy and experimental. I will adapt another chapter because there are some that are extremely good, something very different from the first film, and now ‘Return to Silent Hill.’ I like this world, and I can see that plenty of people are thinking I’m doing a pretty good job.

Adapting an iconic video game is challenging at the best of times, and Gans recalled actually receiving death threats when he tackled the first movie in 2006. “It was a big challenge to adapt correctly and respectfully a game which is considered a classic,” he said. “We know that the people who love video games are very passionate. I remember when I did the first film, I received plenty of death threats. People were saying, ‘If you mess up this one, we are going to find you.’ So I came onto the first film with great responsibility, and certainly even more with the second one. At the same time, it was important for me to imagine a movie that people who are not playing games can be interested in.

As I write this, Return to Silent Hill stands at 17% on Rotten Tomatoes with a 29% Popcornmeter rating. Not great, but the original film didn’t receive many positive reviews either and has since become something of a cult favourite.

We Were Mixed on Return to Silent Hill

Our own Tyler Nichols was a big fan of the original, and although he enjoyed the new movie, it wasn’t quite what he’d hoped for. “I’m not sure Return quite lands in the way that it intends to,” he wrote. “It’s a little cornier and cheaper than I would have liked. The acting can be a bit hammy, and it genuinely feels like I’m playing a video game at various points. But I still found myself invested in the story and enjoying James’ journey. This is certainly a lot better than Revelation, but it falls short of the 2006 film. Its messaging is a bit dark, and I’m not sure everything comes together in the end, but I enjoyed the journey itself.” You can check out the rest of his review right here.

Also, be sure to watch our interviews with Christophe Gans, as well as stars Hannah Emily Anderson and Evie Templeton.

PLOT: When a man receives a mysterious letter from his lost love, he is drawn to Silent Hill, a once familiar town now consumed by darkness.

REVIEW: I still remember being blown away by the first Silent Hill movie when it was released to theaters in 2006. It was such a unique experience and, as someone who hadn’t played the games at the time, felt like a glimpse into such a fascinating world. It had a very dark and nihilistic approach, and as a teen, I absolutely loved downer endings. So I was very excited to see director Christophe Gans return to the franchise after 20 years to create another entry with Return to Silent Hill. Only this time, he’s taking much more inspiration from the games.

Return to Silent Hill follows the story of James Sunderland, who travels to the town of Silent Hill after receiving a mysterious letter from his long-lost love. Game fans will notice this is pretty much a retelling of the second Silent Hill game, but it does still take some detours along the way. It’s going to be hard not to constantly compare this to the game since there are so many damn similarities. Even its presentation harkens to visuals from the newer game and recreates shots/locations left and right. So I won’t judge it against that property, but I’ll mention it when it’s obvious.

Jeremy Irvine does a decent enough job as James and conveys his guilt well. However, his accent does slip a few times, which can be a bit distracting. I’ve liked Hannah Emily Anderson since Jigsaw, so it’s nice to see her in a prominent role(s). She fits the world well. Wednesday fans will be excited to see Evie Templeton, but truthfully, she’s not in the film much. Though it is cool to see her in the role of Laura since she also plays her in the game remake from 2024. Everyone feels like they’re straight out of a cutscene, for better or worse.

Return to Silent Hill review

I’ve always loved Silent Hill‘s aesthetic, with its foggy town and decrepit buildings. I was often reminded of Hellboy: The Crooked Man in that they clearly didn’t have a lot of money, but there was still a lot of creativity in the filmmaking. Sure, some greenscreen doesn’t land, and the FX can be inconsistent, but this sure takes advantage of the creepy visuals. The nurses are absolutely iconic, and they work incredibly well here. I just wish they were around for a bit longer. Even Pyramid Head is a bit underhanded, though it’s nice to have him be more than just a villainous presence and be more of what he was originally intended to be.

Return to Silent Hill finds itself in a strange place: it may be too faithful to the game for general audiences, and too far from it for fans of the series. I found myself still enjoying the film while acknowledging its flaws. It genuinely feels like a video game come to life and has some changes that make the narrative beats hit harder. But I also question how ambiguous much of the film is and whether that will be accessible to those who don’t know the games or understand this world.

I’m not sure Return quite lands in the way that it intends to. It’s a little cornier and cheaper than I would have liked. The acting can be a bit hammy, and it genuinely feels like I’m playing a video game at various points. But I still found myself invested in the story and enjoying James’ journey. This is certainly a lot better than Revelation, but it falls short of the 2006 film. Its messaging is a bit dark, and I’m not sure everything comes together in the end, but I enjoyed the journey itself.

Return to Silent Hill releases to theaters on January 23rd, 2026.

It’s rare for a director to come back to a franchise after a whopping 20 years, yet that’s the exact situation we find ourselves in with Christophe Gans and Silent Hill. I was a big fan of his 2006 film, and given how bad its Gans-less follow-up, Silent Hill: Revelation, turned out to be, it was clear he had a lot to do with the first film’s success. So it’s exciting to see him return and adapt the story from one of the most beloved games. Return to Silent Hill is an interesting attempt to revive the film franchise, and my review will be released tomorrow.

I spoke with stars Hannah Emily Anderson and Evie Templeton about their roles in the new film. Evie gets into what it was like to play the same character in both Return and the Silent Hill 2 remake, and why she felt so comfortable in the role. Hannah has quite the task ahead of her, playing multiple characters, so she gets into which was her favorite to portray, as well as the long hours in the makeup chair. I also spoke with Christophe Gans about what it was like to return to this world after two decades and how much technology has changed in the meantime.

Return to Silent Hill plot:

Follows James (Jeremy Irvine), a man broken after his relationship with the love of his life, Mary (Hannah Emily Anderson), ends. When a mysterious letter from her calls him back to Silent Hill, he finds a once-recognizable town transformed by an unknown evil. While James desperately searches for Mary, he encounters terrifying creatures and begins to unravel the mystery of what happened to the town. But as he descends deeper into the darkness, the secrets he uncovers lead to a horrifying truth, and James finds himself struggling to hold on long enough to save his one true love.
