PLOT: A young woman, Asia Reeves (Zazie Beetz), fresh out of prison, poses as a new hire at an exclusive New York high-rise, planning to find her missing sister. Once there, she realizes the building’s residents and staff plan to use her as a blood sacrifice to appease the satanic presence that has a hold over them.

REVIEW: They Will Kill You continues Warner Bros. and New Line’s run of slick, fun horror flicks. They’ve had tremendous success recently with new installments of The Conjuring, the revival of Final Destination, and wound up making one of the best movies of the year—horror or otherwise—with Weapons. They Will Kill You should be another crowd-pleasing hit, packed with blood-soaked carnage and a smartly cast Zazie Beetz in action-heroine mode.

While it shares certain similarities with Ready or Not and even its sequel (the sister-in-jeopardy plotline), it has a few key differences that keep it from feeling too familiar. For one, Beetz’s Asia Reeves is much more of a straight-up action heroine than Samara Weaving’s character in the Ready or Not films, where the appeal came from her reliance on ingenuity to survive. Reeves is more of a badass, having spent a decade in prison and becoming a master of hand-to-hand combat and improvised weaponry. Her foes are also deadlier than Weaving’s, with the joke of those films being that she was hunted by often idiotic bad guys. Here, the residents of the building have certain strengths that make them much harder to defeat—but I won’t spoil what those may be.

Beetz makes for a fun heroine, packing a lot of attitude and not being too squeamish to do things like knock a child out cold when the brat stabs her in the back (literally). The joke of the film is that no matter what is thrown at her, she rises above, with director Kirill Sokolov staging some dynamic action scenes. My favorite is a battle where Asia, wielding an axe with the blade wrapped in flaming cloth, lights a dark room full of opponents while splitting heads. The movie is really well shot by Isaac Bauman, eschewing the overly dark digital look that’s marring a lot of modern studio horror. It looks like it has a healthy budget that was used wisely.

The final trailer has been released for They Will Kill You, an action-packed horror comedy starring Zazie Beetz

One thing horror fans will love is the practical gore effects, which are emphasized over excessive CGI and give the proceedings a much-needed kick. The eyeball gag, which hopefully won’t be spoiled by ads, is especially effective.

Beetz is also surrounded by a great cast, with Patricia Arquette playing the Irish head of staff, who proves to be Asia’s most formidable opponent. Heather Graham also has a lot of fun playing against type as one of the meanest residents, with her involved in many of the standout gore moments. Former Harry Potter star Tom Felton is quite funny as a tenant flummoxed by Asia’s resilience, while Myha’la gives the movie some heart as the only maid in the building to somewhat ally herself with Asia.

They Will Kill You winds up being a bloody good time, even if some of the narrative threads never pay off (different themed floors—with one being a “f*ck floor”—are teased but never go anywhere), and the climax feels a bit too rushed and convenient. While it will undoubtedly suffer coming out so close on the heels of Ready or Not 2 for horror fans, it’s different enough that no one will feel it’s a retread and can accept it on its own merits—even if I can’t help but think one of the two movies should have moved, given how close together they’re opening.

Director Andy Muschietti and his producer / sister Barbara Muschietti, the filmmaking team behind Mama and the $1 billion grossing adaptations of Stephen King’s It, recently teamed up with Skydance to form a new horror label called Nocturna, and the first project to come out of the Nocturna partnership is the horror thriller They Will Kill You, which has New Line Cinema on board to co-finance and distribute. It was recently announced that the film will be reaching theatres on March 27, 2026 – and with that date right around the corner, the final trailer has dropped online! You can watch it in the embed above.

Cast and Synopsis

Zazie Beetz, whose credits include Joker, Bullet Train, and Deadpool 2, stars as a woman who answers a help wanted ad to be a housekeeper in a mysterious high-rise in New York City, not realizing she is entering a community that has seen a number of disappearances over the years and may be under the grip of a Satanic cult. Beetz is joined in the cast by Patricia Arquette (True Romance), Tom Felton of the Harry Potter franchise, Heather Graham of Boogie Nights and Suitable Flesh, and Myha’la of Industry and Bodies Bodies Bodies. Arquette’s character is one of the leads, the head of the co-op. Felton is a member of the cult.

They Will Kill You is described as being “a tonal mix of Ready or Not and The Raid.” Kirill Sokolov – who is said to be known for his dark sense of humor – will be directing the film from a screenplay he wrote with Alex Litvak. Sokolov previously directed the action comedy No Looking Back and the comedic thriller Why Don’t You Just Die!, both of which were Russian productions. Litvak is best known for writing the 2010 Predator sequel Predators with Michael Finch. He went on to co-write Paul W.S. Anderson’s version of The Three Musketeers and the TV movie Secret Society of Second Born Royals.

The Muschiettis are producing They Will Kill You alongside David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, and Dan Kagan. Nocturna Co-Heads of Film, Russell Ackerman and John Schoenfelder, serve as executive producers with Sokolov, Litvak, and Carl Hampe. Barbara Muschietti has described the film as a fun horror comedy action movie that will make viewers smile.

Judging by the final trailer, it looks like Muschietti’s description is right on the money. They Will Kill You seems like it’s going to be a lot of fun.

Chris

It’s time for SXSW! Once again, film fans will be gathering in Austin, Texas, for a week of cool, largely genre-focused movies looking to build a bit of buzz before many of them come out over the next few months. SXSW has steadily been rising in reputation, with it perhaps most famous for being the place where eventual Oscar-winner Everything Everywhere All at Once had its world premiere. This will be JoBlo’s second time covering the fest, as we attended last year, where we caught the world premieres of The Accountant 2, Another Simple Favor, Death of a Unicorn, and more.

SXSW is interesting in that it seems to be a better place for studios to launch crowd-pleasers than a high-end indie market, with last year’s probably best film at the festival, The Rivals of Amziah Kingyet unreleased. Yet genre indies do get sold there, with Good Boy having been a pretty big acquisition last year, and it did solid box office when it came out last summer. With that in mind, here are some of the movies we’re most eager to see this year.

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come

ready or not 2

Radio Silence returns with a sequel to their survival horror flick, with Samara Weaving reprising her star-making role as a young woman marked for death by a family who wanted to use her as a satanic sacrifice. Fresh off killing her way out of that situation, her character is forced to participate in another “kill or be killed” game by another clan, which includes such genre stalwarts as Elijah Wood, David Cronenberg, and Sarah Michelle Gellar. Plus, Kathryn Newton co-stars as Weaving’s sister, who is forced to join the hunt. The last one was a blast, so here’s hoping the sequel is just as good.

They Will Kill You:

They Will Kill You

Oddly, this seems to have the same premise as Ready or Not, in which a young woman (in this case, Zazie Beetz) is hunted by a satanic cult that lives in the high-end hotel she’s just been hired at. Patricia Arquette co-stars. This comes from WB/New Line, who have had a strong run of horror movies as of late, so this might be another crowd-pleaser, although it’s odd that this and Ready or Not 2 are opening so close to each other (they hit theaters only one week apart).

Over Your Dead Body:

Over Your Dead Body

Samara Weaving seems to be the MVP of this year’s SXSW, with her showing up in not one, but two movies. This one pairs her with Jason Segel in a remake of the Norwegian action-comedy-horror flick The Trip. In it, Segel and Weaving play a couple who are each planning to murder the other on a weekend trip to the country, only to join forces against a bigger threat. This has action scenes by 87North and is directed by The Lonely Island’s Jorma Taccone, who also helmed MacGruber.

Pretty Lethal:

A trailer has been released for the Prime Video thriller Pretty Lethal, about a group of ballerinas trapped in a bad situation

Another 87North production, this one focuses on a troupe of ballerinas forced to rely on years of brutal training to survive a team of armed men. Maude Apatow, Lana Condor, and Uma Thurman star.

Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice:

Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice

Vince Vaughn, James Marsden, and Eiza Gonzalez star in this buddy action movie about two hitmen, the woman they both love, and… a time machine? The trailer for this one looked like a lot of fun, and it’s nice to see Vaughn return to action, having slayed in the now-classic Brawl in Cell Block 99.

Power Ballad:

Power Ballad

One of my favorite directors, John Carney (Sing StreetOnce), returns with another music-driven comedy in which Paul Rudd plays a frustrated singer-songwriter whose composition is stolen by a pop star (Nick Jonas). I love Carney, and I love Rudd, so this one is an easy must-see and may well end up as my favorite of the fest (there’s never been a Carney movie I didn’t love).

Hokum:

Hokum Adam Scott

Adam Scott stars in this Neon-distributed horror film about an author (played by the great Adam Scott) staying in a hotel in Ireland that might be haunted. Scott is having a much-deserved moment in the spotlight thanks to Severance, so I’m eager to see him stretch. Also, Neon has become a trusted name in horror.

Obsession:

A new teaser trailer has been released for director Curry Barker's horror film Obsession, coming soon from Blumhouse

Curry Barker’s film was a sensation at TIFF’s Midnight Madness, where I (regrettably) missed out on seeing it. I’m looking to remedy that, and Focus is using SXSW as a platform to launch a movie they surely hope will become the next indie horror smash, with it getting a prime summer release date.

Normal:

Bob Odenkirk makes a welcome return to action in Ben Wheatley’s small-town-set shoot-’em-up. Odenkirk plays a temporary sheriff who discovers the town he’s posted in harbors a deadly secret. I actually caught this one at TIFF (read my review), so this will be a repeat viewing for me — albeit a welcome one. It’s even showing on 35mm film!

I Love Boosters:

I Love Boosters

Boots Riley returns with his much-anticipated follow-up to his indie hit Sorry to Bother You. Not much is known about this one, but it stars Keke Palmer and Demi Moore, and is being positioned as a huge release by Neon.

Which movie are you most eager to see? Let us know in the comments!

Competition

Given that this “blood-soaked, high-octane horror-action-comedy” has been compared to Ready or Not, it’s interesting to note that its March release date puts it in direct competition with the Ready or Not sequel, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. Previously scheduled for an April 10th theatrical release, that movie moved up to March 27th a couple of weeks ago. So now, we’ll have to wait and see if Ready or Not 2 and They Will Kill You are going to remain on a box office collision course.

What did you think of the They Will Kill You trailer? Does this look like a movie you’d want to catch on the big screen? Let us know by leaving a comment below. The film has been given an R rating for strong bloody violence, gore, language and brief sexual content/nudity.

She said, “We shot it in South Africa last year and we are very much near the finish line. It’s a lot of fun. It’s horror-comedy-action, and a great mixture and balance of those three. Yesterday, we heard that Patricia Arquette (True Romance) has joined the cast of Kenneth Branagh’s contemporary psychological thriller The Last Disturbance of Madeline Hynde. Now, The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Arquette is also in the cast of the horror thriller They Will Kill You, which also stars Tom Felton of the Harry Potter franchise and Zazie Beetz, whose credits include Joker, Bullet Train, and Deadpool 2.

New Line Cinema are on board to co-finance and distribute They Will Kill You. Director Andy Muschietti and his producer / sister Barbara Muschietti, the filmmaking team behind Mama and the $1 billion grossing adaptations of Stephen King’s It, recently teamed up with Skydance to form a new horror label called Nocturna, and this is the first project to come out of the Nocturna partnership.

Kirill Sokolov – who is said to be known for his dark sense of humor – will be directing the film from a screenplay he wrote with Alex Litvak.

They Will Kill You is aiming to start filming in South Africa in mid-September. The story centers on a woman (Beetz) who answers a help wanted ad to be a housekeeper in a mysterious high-rise in New York City, not realizing she is entering a community that has seen a number of disappearances over the years and may be under the grip of a Satanic cult. The project is described as being “a tonal mix of Ready or Not and The Raid.”

Arquette’s character is one of the leads, the head of the co-op. Felton is a member of the cult.

It’s fitting that They Will Kill You will be our first project, as it perfectly encapsulates Nocturna’s mission of delivering unique and entertaining horror experiences that will live in the audiences’ nightmares for years.
