While Phil Lord and Christopher Miller celebrate the success of their latest box office success with Project Hail Mary, fans of the filmmaker duo already want to know when they’ll be adapting another of Andy Weir’s page-turning novels. According to Lord and Miller, Artemis is the next Weir-related project on their list, with the duo striving to solve their approach to bringing the 2017 best-selling novel to life on the silver screen. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Lord and Miller said they think they’ve figured out a way to honor Weir’s story and that the project is something they’re seriously considering.

How’s the adaptation of Artemis coming along?

When THR as the duo if Artemis is still in play, Miller said, “There is an Artemis script, it’s delightful. The thing that was holding that back for years was, how do we execute one-sixth gravity? The story takes place on the moon. We think we’ve figured it out. That’s one of the ones that’s possible.”

Even if they’ve solved for Artemis, Lord and Miller admit they have no idea when we’d see it. “There’s a backlog of like seven or eight things that we want to do,” Lord said about the duo’s schedule. Thankfully, they’re tight with Weir, so the opportunity isn’t going anywhere. In fact, they even call on Weir when they’ve got science-related questions. “When my son had science questions I couldn’t answer, I would be like, maybe Andy will know,” Miller told THR.

Project Hail Mary blasts off at the box office

Meanwhile, Lord and Miller’s Project Hail Mary is blasting off at the box office with an impressive launch of $140.9M+ worldwide. The nail-biting science-fiction drama stars Ryan Gosling as Science teacher Ryland Grace, who wakes up alone on a spaceship light-years from Earth. As his memory returns, he uncovers a mission to stop a mysterious substance killing the sun. While trying to save Earth, an unexpected friendship may be the key.

Our thoughts on Project Hail Mary

Chris Bumbray reviewed Project Hail Mary for JoBlo, saying in his 9/10 review, “While it runs a hefty 156 minutes, the running time zips along, with Lord and Miller having a good handle on pace. It’s really an impeccably made movie, with everyone involved doing superlative work, including Daniel Pemberton, who contributes a strong score. It’s the kind of movie that deserves to become the next Sinners, so hopefully audiences will give it a shot. It’s upbeat and leaves you walking out of the theater feeling optimistic — which I think all of us could use in these rather somber times.”

Have you read Andy Weir’s Artemis novel? Have you seen Project Hail Mary yet? I might catch it this afternoon, but we’ll see. I saw Ready or Not 2: Here I Come on Friday night, and might be theatered out at the moment. Especially after paying nearly $50 for snacks on top of ticket prices. Outrageous!

Whew! That’s the sigh of relief no doubt being breathed at Amazon/MGM this morning, with the news coming in that Project Hail Mary, their $200 million sci-fi epic, is a major hit, with a great $80.5 million opening. While I only predicted it would make about $40–50 million this weekend, audiences rallied around this well-reviewed (including by me) Andy Weir adaptation, with it setting a number of records this weekend. For one thing, it’s the highest opening of 2026 (so far), but it’s also the second-best opening for a non-franchise movie ever (after Oppenheimer, which beat it by just over $2 million). It’s also Ryan Gosling’s best opening as a solo star (although Barbie, in which he was part of the ensemble, made more). That’s important, because following the failure of the well-reviewed The Fall Guy, many wondered if he still had box office clout. Clearly he does, which bodes well for his upcoming Star Wars movie, Starfighter.

It’s worth noting that Project Hail Mary was a huge theatrical swing for Amazon/MGM, with them showing a commendable commitment to the big screen. It helped that Project Hail Mary was shot in 70mm IMAX, which I think gives people an extra enticement to check something out on the big screen (people love this format), making it an event. The CinemaScore rating is a very solid A, putting it in Sinners territory, which bodes well for a long box office run.

Pixar’s Hoppers has another solid showing in week three, with the $18 million weekend adding to its $120 million haul. It will certainly beat Elemental’s $140 million-plus total, although it seems unlikely to cross the $200 million mark, especially with the next Super Mario movie opening so soon. Bollywood epic Dhurandhar: The Revenge set a record for the biggest North American opening of a Bollywood movie, with it making an excellent $10 million-plus on fewer than 1,000 screens. Its per-screen average was the highest in the top ten besides Project Hail Mary.

ready or not 2

That movie’s success proved to be bad news for Searchlight’s Ready or Not: Here I Come, with the sequel underwhelming with a $9.1 million opening. That’s in the same range as the first film, but the sequel was more expensive and likely won’t have the same kind of legs, although it should be a hit when it hits streaming. Reminders of Him had a surprisingly steep falloff for a Colleen Hoover adaptation, with the 56% decline (and $8 million gross) perhaps making it a victim of Project Hail Mary’s appeal to date-night crowds. It’s made $33 million so far, meaning even if it continues to drop off, it should turn a nice profit.

Scream 7 is now officially the highest-grossing movie in the franchise, with the $4.3 million weekend contributing to a great $114 million gross. Sony’s GOAT made another $3.5 million as it inches its way toward $100 million (it’s currently at $97 million). A24’s microbudget horror flick Undertone dropped off a massive 66% in week two, but considering it cost well under a million dollars, its $15 million total gross means it’s been very profitable for the studio. The rest of the top 10 was rounded out by specialty titles, with the indie animated flick The Pout-Pout Fish making $1.5 million, and the latest MET Opera offering, Tristan und Isolde, making $722k.

Next weekend doesn’t have any huge openings except the SXSW hit They Will Kill You, so expect Project Hail Mary to once again come in on top. What will the drop-off be? Take a guess in the comments.

Sometimes it’s good to admit when you’re wrong, and in the case of Project Hail Mary’s box office prospects, I was way off base in my predictions from earlier this week. According to Deadline, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s adaptation of Andy Weir’s follow-up to The Martian is looking at an opening weekend north of $75 million, with $77 million in the cards. That’s nearly twice the $40 million I predicted, with audiences granting the film a solid A CinemaScore rating, putting it in Sinners territory.

Its success is a major win for Amazon/MGM, who spent north of $200 million to bring this sci-fi epic to the big screen. They went all out on making it a theatrical event, with an IMAX/70mm release—something that tends to pay off for event movies, as it signals to potential moviegoers that this is an experience that can’t easily be replicated at home. Notably, it’s one of only two non-franchise/sequel movies to open north of $60 million in the last decade (a depressing stat), with the other two being Jordan Peele’s Us and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. While the budget is high on this one, it has another weekend coming up more or less all to itself before the Super Mario sequel opens over Easter (read our review HERE).

Meanwhile, the weekend’s other big release, the sequel Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, is looking at a more modest $10 million opening in fourth place. That’s actually $2 million higher than the first film, although the budget is bigger this time around. It’s being overrun by another new release, the much-anticipated Hindi action sequel Dhurandhar: The Revenge, which looks like it will make over $12 million this weekend. Second place should, as expected, go to Hopperswith $21 million, which is an excellent hold as the Pixar movie is showing some serious legs.

What are you seeing this weekend? Let us know in the comments.

After raking in $11 million in Thursday night previews, Project Hail Mary is off to a great start, and I’ve got my fingers crossed that this one will be a major success. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller from a script by Drew Goddard, and based on the novel by Andy Weir, the film stars Ryan Gosling as a man who awakens on an interstellar spacecraft with no memory of how he came to be there.

All About Project Hail Mary

Science teacher Ryland Grace wakes up on a spaceship with no recollection of who he is or how he got there,” reads the official synopsis. “As his memory slowly returns, he soon discovers he must solve the riddle behind a mysterious substance that’s causing the sun to die out. As details of the mission unravel, he calls on his scientific training and sheer ingenuity — but he may not have to do it alone.

In addition to Gosling, the film also stars Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, Milana Vayntrub, and more. James Ortiz serves as the voice and lead puppeteer of Rocky, an alien Ryland encounters on his journey. However, Gosling said they had originally planned on finding another voice for the character during post-production.

James Ortiz was meant to just be the puppeteer and we were going to figure out Rocky’s voice later. But James started doing the lines for me so that I had someone to read lines with, so I wasn’t just imagining this dialogue,” Gosling explained. “[James] understood Rocky so deeply that it got to a point where he knew what Rocky would say, what he wouldn’t say, what he would do. James was Rocky and James is Rocky now and you can’t imagine it any other way.

We Loved It

The hype machine has been running high on this one, but our own Chris Bumbray thinks it’s well deserved. “While it runs a hefty 156 minutes, the running time zips along, with Lord and Miller having a good handle on pace,” he wrote. “It’s really an impeccably made movie, with everyone involved doing superlative work, including Daniel Pemberton, who contributes a strong score. It’s the kind of movie that deserves to become the next Sinners, so hopefully audiences will give it a shot. Hail Mary

The hype around Project Hail Mary may not be Avengers levels, but it was high enough, with enough good buzz, that it was hardly a Hail Mary for the studio, and, so far, this week, it’s more like a lob pass to the end zone for a sure score. This is a pretty nice moment for a property that hasn’t been pre-established as a franchise. Deadline is reporting that early Thursday previews have rocketed to over $11 million at the box office.

Full of Grace

Although there had been some sure things that surprisingly underperformed in recent years, Project Hail Mary was already a much-loved, best-selling novel. Excitement would only grow when the film boasted Drew Goddard adapting the book to the screen and the directors of the Spider-Verse films would be helming the project. This early preview total is reportedly the best to date for a non-franchise title. It beat out Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which brought in $10.5 million, F1, which pulled in $10 million, Weapons, which opened with a $5.7 million and another awards darling, Sinners, which garnered $4.7 million in early preview gross.

Phil Lord is with thee

The film is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, with Amy Pascal, Gosling, Lord, Miller, Aditya Sood, Rachel O’Connor and Andy Weir all on board as producers of the film. Drew Goddard wrote the adapted screenplay based on the Andy Weir novel. Weir had also written the novel for The Martian, which served as source material for the Matt Damon film of the same name. Goddard is also set to executive produce with his Goddard Textiles partner Sarah Esberg, along with Ken Kao.

Project Hail Mary was filmed for IMAX. Gosling is joined by Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung and Milana Vayntrub. The synopsis reads, “Science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship light years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction… but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone.”

PLOT: A school teacher (Ryan Gosling) with a doctorate in molecular biology wakes up on a spaceship light years away from home with no idea how he got there. Slowly, he begins to realize he’s been sent on an Earth-saving mission from which he will never be able to return.

REVIEW: Rarely has a studio had as much faith in a movie as Amazon/MGM seems to have with Project Hail Mary, the biggest film they’ve produced since the streamer started to ramp up its theatrical release calendar. Based on the novel by Andy Weir (The Martian) and directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (the Spider-Verse films, 21 & 22 Jump Street), the film has not only been getting a lot of word-of-mouth screenings, but this weekend it’s set to play a limited 70mm engagement a week before it goes wide. Clearly the studio is convinced they have a winner, and having finally seen the film for myself, I’m inclined to agree.

While time will tell whether Project Hail Mary turns into the theatrical event it’s being positioned as, it’s a thoroughly entertaining space adventure which, like The Martian before it (also adapted by screenwriter Drew Goddard), aims to be an optimistic, feel-good story that should inspire a generation of would-be astronauts — or scientists for that matter.

Ryan Gosling is perfectly cast as the hero, Dr. Ryland Grace, who’d prefer to be teaching science in a middle school than floating in outer space, making him a less-than-stoic hero. Gosling excels in the part, imbuing him with a large dose of humor while never making him come off as anything other than the brilliant man he’s supposed to be. He’s goofy but never silly, and Gosling has the presence needed for the role, with it almost becoming a one-man show for a good chunk of its running time.

Well… that’s almost true. In fact, beyond Gosling, the movie has another star in his alien buddy Rocky, whom Grace encounters on his journey and who is also trying to save his own planet from the same phenomenon that threatens Earth — a star-destroying organism called Astrophage. Rocky becomes Gosling’s dominant co-star, being a visual-effects-enhanced puppet who was actually operated on set and becomes a true scene-stealer. The friendship that sparks between Grace and Rocky gives the movie its heart, and by using older methods to animate him, he feels real in the way classic sci-fi characters like E.T. or Yoda did, which is strikingly different than if he had just been CGI. He’s a true special effect.

In fact, Lord and Miller, who will likely become the two hottest directors in town after this, have made a deliberate attempt to adopt and adapt some older VFX techniques, with the film eschewing green screen for practical sets and using CGI to give everything a finished polish. It feels like a reaction to the overly CGI-driven Hollywood blockbusters that are becoming endangered by the growing use of AI. While many will compare it to The Martian, it also seems inspired by Peter Hyams’ underrated sequel to 2001: A Space Odyssey, 2010, to which it shares a few visual similarities (plus they both open with the classic MGM logo).

Project Hail Mary

It’s also innovatively photographed by Greig Fraser, with it showing in a variety of formats, including 2.35:1 70mm and IMAX screenings. In the IMAX screening I saw, the aspect ratio changes, with the Earthbound scenes in scope while the frame opens to the IMAX ratio for all the sequences in space. The Earth sequences only take up about 20% of the movie, but like the rest of Project Hail Mary they have a lot of warmth, with Grace becoming close to Sandra Hüller’s character — the cold head of the Hail Mary project. In a nod to her work in Toni Erdmann, in which she memorably sang Whitney Houston’s “The Greatest Love of All,” she gets another karaoke moment, singing a stirring version of Harry Styles’ “Sign of the Times.”

While it runs a hefty 156 minutes, the running time zips along, with Lord and Miller having a good handle on pace. It’s really an impeccably made movie, with everyone involved doing superlative work, including Daniel Pemberton, who contributes a strong score. It’s the kind of movie that deserves to become the next Sinners, so hopefully audiences will give it a shot. It’s upbeat and leaves you walking out of the theater feeling optimistic — which I think all of us could use in these rather somber times.

This weekend sees the release of one of the year’s most anticipated films, Project Hail Mary. Boasting a budget in the $200 million range, it’s one of several huge gambles Amazon/MGM is making on theatrical films this year, with it having been shot by directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller in a variety of premium formats. It’s getting a large-scale IMAX release, as well as select 70MM screenings (some of which actually happened last weekend). The film comes with a 95% Rotten Tomatoes rating (we gave it a rave you can read here), and audiences are bound to like this adaptation of Andy Weir’s book, with his previous novel, The Martian, having been a huge pre-pandemic hit.

Some believe the film could open north of $70 million. As much as I want it to succeed, I think that number is wildly overinflated. The Martian only opened with $54 million, and that was pre-pandemic, when movies made more money, and it also starred Matt Damon, whose box office draw has been consistent. Folks love Ryan Gosling, but outside of Barbie, his movies have performed inconsistently, with The Fall Guy having underperformed despite great reviews. I’m thinking a $40 million opening is more likely, with $50 million a possibility.

The bigger question is whether it will have legs, as The Martian opened at $54 million but went on to gross $228 million domestically (it was an even bigger hit overseas). Project Hail Mary has an easy path to the top spot at the box office both this week and next week, before the next Super Mario movie comes out over Easter.

Pixar’s Hoppers should easily take number two with about $15 million. It had a good hold last weekend and will clear $100 million by the time the numbers roll in Sunday night. The Colleen Hoover adaptation, Reminders of Him, should make about $10 million, with it likely to have legs, just like the last Hoover adaptation, Regretting You.

Fourth place should go to the sequel Ready or Not 2: Here I Come with about $7 million. That’s not too far off from the $8 million the last one opened with, but it seems unlikely this will be the kind of sequel that really builds on its predecessor. Scream 7 should leapfrog over A24’s Undertone this weekend with about $4 million.

Here are my predictions:

  1. Project Hail Mary: $40 million
  2. Hoppers: $15 million
  3. Reminders of Him: $10 million
  4. Ready or Not 2: Here I Come: $7 million
  5. Scream 7: $4 million

What will you be seeing this weekend? Let us know in the comments.

With glowing reviews already pouring in, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s adaptation of Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary looks poised to be a major hit when it arrives next week. But the filmmaking duo have been circling another of Weir’s novels for nearly a decade, and the film’s success could finally give that long-dormant project the push it needs. Lord and Miller were first announced as the directors of Artemis back in 2017, but the adaptation has seen little movement since. Now, with Project Hail Mary generating buzz, that may finally be about to change.

Lord and Miller on Artemis

While speaking with THR, Lord and Miller were asked whether Artemis was still in play. “There is an Artemis script, it’s delightful,” Miller said. “The thing that was holding that back for years was, how do we execute one-sixth gravity? The story takes place on the moon. We think we’ve figured it out. That’s one of the ones that’s possible.

Artemis tells the story of Jasmine Bashara, aka Jazz, a directionless twenty-something dreaming of a better life beyond the small town she lives in, except in this case, that small town is Artemis, the first and only city on the moon. With debts to pay and barely enough money to cover her rent, Jazz takes the chance on a life-changing score, which thrusts her straight into the middle of a conspiracy for control of Artemis itself.

The last we heard, the script was being written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Fallout).

Project Hail Mary

As for Project Hail Mary, the film stars Ryan Gosling as a science teacher who wakes up on a spaceship light-years away from home with no idea how he got there. Slowly, he begins to realize he’s been sent on an Earth-saving mission from which he will never be able to return, but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone. The film will hit theaters on March 20.

Project Hail Mary

It’ll be just about a month to the release of the anticipated adaptation of Project Hail Mary. The film, which is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, has been given the release date of March 20, 2026. Amy Pascal, Gosling, Lord, Miller, Aditya Sood, Rachel O’Connor and Andy Weir are all on board as producers of the film.

Out of this World Reactions

Early reactions to the sci-fi movie have started to show up all over X and the responses are overwhelmingly positive. The first comes from director Edgar Wright, who raves about the film after seeing it in IMAX, saying, “Was lucky enough to see ‘Project Hail Mary’ on a towering IMAX screen last night. A long overdue big-screen live-action return for @philiplord & @chrizmillr, it’s a dazzling but very human epic. The level of detail in every aspect of the production was awe inspiring, not least the puppetry. I also had warm and fuzzy comparisons to 70’s monastic classics like ‘Silent Running’ and ‘Dark Star’, which is high praise indeed. Drew Goddard delivers an excellent screenplay, Greig Fraser’s work is gorgeous, Gosling is endlessly magnetic and Sandra Huller gets to show her ‘Toni Erdmann’ chops again. It made my head spin thinking about how complicated it would be to make. But saving the universe is no easy task. Go see it huge!”

Another reaction comes from The Holofiles, who posted, PROJECT HAIL MARY is an extraordinary achievement. The kind of movie that makes you grateful you’re alive at a point in history in which movies are made. Heartfelt doesn’t begin to describe how genuinely moving it is. Ryan Gosling delivers a performance that should be considered for awards come the end of the year. He brings incredible levity and warmth to a film beautiful in its themes and technical achievements. Greig Fraser’s cinematography is gorgeous, Daniel Pemberton’s score is so moving, and Lord and Miller direct their best movie yet. Destined to be one of the best movies of 2026 #ProjectHailMary”

User @imPatrickT was more succinct in his reaction, but praises the film no less, claiming, “PROJECT HAIL MARY is one of the greatest space adventure films of all time. It’s gorgeous, full of heart, and Gosling is spectacular. He gave his all to this one and you’ll be in awe. If you’ve fallen out of love with going to the movies, I promise this one will win you back.”

Film critic Eric Marchen remarked, “PROJECT HAIL MARY: Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s must-see space odyssey blasts off as the first great blockbuster of 2026. Out-of-this-world cinematography from Greig Fraser reaches for the stars while anchored by a stellar Ryan Gosling performance. This movie ROCKS!”

Steve

How long is too long for a movie to run before we start questioning what we’re doing with our time and money? Earlier this week, Amazon MGM Studios revealed that Ryan Gosling’s new science-fiction adventure film, Project Hail Mary, would be 156 minutes long! That’s more than two-and-a-half hours! While I’ve not read Andy Weir’s space exploration epic, I’ve seen the book in stores countless times over the past few weeks. I’ve developed a book-buying problem in the new year, but that’s neither here nor there. Weir’s novel is 476 pages, depending on the format. Could we not find a way to make Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s adaptation a more agreeable length? One that doesn’t test the fortitude of our kidneys and ADHD-ravaged attention spans? Anyway, Project Hail Mary is just a stepping stone on the way to my genuine concern: bloat.

Old Man Yells At Cloud

Back in my day, movies were, on average, 90 minutes a pop. Or, if you were a blockbuster affair, 100 to 120 minutes. There are exceptions, of course, but that’s why I said average. Whether it was because of story choice, artistic vision, or leaving a whole scene on the cutting room floor, filmmakers in the ’80s and ’90s often killed their darlings in the interest of their film project landing in the “sweet spot” or “butter zone.” You could literally set your watch to a movie that took no longer than an hour and a half, and there were fewer commercials and coming attractions at the theater, too. Today, if you want to engage with something like Project Hail Mary in theaters, you should clear your schedule. You can time your arrival so that the film starts as you take a seat, but good luck. There’s no telling how long it will take to get snacks, settle into your seat, and suffer through the same car and medication commercials. Oh, and don’t forget to leave time for the misadventures of sentient popcorn that wants to sell you more debt through a theater-approved credit card offer.

Christopher Nolan Defends Long Runtimes

I could go into how movie bloat extends the theater-going experience by alarming proportions, but perhaps it’s time to hear from the other side of the aisle. According to Tenet and The Odyssey filmmaker Christopher Nolan, younger viewers want longer, denser films, preferring to pay for a substantial experience rather than a quick, shallow one. Nolan urges studios to “trust the audience,” asking that they not force filmmakers to make edits to their projects based on the perceived habits of select audience members. Nolan also thinks TV is the culprit in the “corruption” of the cinematic experience, saying TV relies heavily on dialogue rather than communicating through atmosphere and sound. Even if movies are a combination of sight and sound, Nolan argues that film is a visual medium, first and foremost. A filmmaker’s job is to invite audiences into a world through art. It’s possible that we don’t reach great heights without an extended runtime to establish worlds and characters.

Social Mediots

I’m not here to argue with Mr. Nolan. He knows far more about the industry than I ever will. Still, I wonder if the romance of filmmaking clouds his perception of how audiences receive and engage with cinema in the modern age. We live in an age where nearly everyone has a smartphone, a seemingly endless source of information and entertainment at the touch of a button. For some, the moment there’s a lull in the action, or a movie’s plot isn’t developing fast enough, it’s time to whip out the phone, play a game of Arrows (look it up, it’s fun), or doom scroll on social media. If a movie doesn’t command our attention, there’s a device that will give us the dopamine we crave until the ball gets rolling again. Yes, phones are discouraged in theaters, but as more and more people choose to stream movies at home, the likelihood of a smart device winning over a film increases. The more bloat there is in your movie, the more opportunities there are for audiences to disengage.

Wicked is Six Hours Long, Y’all!

Getting back to the subject at hand, I’ll give another example of bloat in Hollywood. We can’t let Project Hail Mary (a movie that looks awesome by the way) have all the fun. Instead, let’s shine a spotlight on Jon M. Chu’s Wicked films. Chu’s Wizard of Oz-inspired epic is an adaptation of a three-hour Broadway musical. With that in mind, did the theatrical version of the story need to be split into two three-hour films? I’m sure Chu has his reasons for presenting the fantasy adventure in two parts. However, I can’t help but wonder if Universal wanted two movies in the interest of making more money, concise storytelling be damned. Even as I type these words, I can hear you grumbling, “Well, duh.” I know. I get it. Still, could we not shave off a song or two (admit it, some of the songs in Wicked: For Good are not bangers) to help mitigate bloat in the overall experience?

Solutions? Bueller? Solutions?

I’m not going to pretend like I have any answers to this “issue.” I’m not going to tell a filmmaker what to do with their own project, nor do I want to throw a wrench into creative works. Maybe a solution is that we need more mini-series, six-part events that give filmmakers the time and space they need to create a concise story, then get the hell out of Dodge. We can present those presentations in a theater, with limited-time screenings ahead of the project’s streaming debut. I’m not here to figure out the logistics of that idea, but I can’t help but feel like there’s something there.

What do you think about bloat in modern-day filmmaking? Is three hours too long to spend in a theater? Is Christopher Nolan right about contemporary audiences wanting more bang for their buck? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Project Hail Mary Runtime

While we still have a bit of time to go on the anticipated adaptation of Project Hail Mary with Ryan Gosling, we now get confirmation on the movie’s runtime from the British Board of Film Classification. The BBFC has given the upcoming sci-fi film a 12A certificate, which equates to about a PG-13. But the site has also confirmed that Project Hail Mary has a runtime of 156 minutes.

Project Hail Mary details

The film, which is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, has been given the release date of March 20, 2026. Amy Pascal, Gosling, Lord, Miller, Aditya Sood, Rachel O’Connor and Andy Weir are all on board as producers of the film.

He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction… but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone.” In the trailer, we are treated to more interactions between Gosling and the alien lifeform that was teased in the first trailer, including a cute bit about the “fist bump.”

MGM’s Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy said in a statement, “All of us at MGM are incredibly excited by this literal dream team coming together around Andy’s astounding novel. With their masterful ability to balance drama, action, and humor, Phil and Chris are the perfect filmmakers to take on this unique material and we are thrilled to have them partner with Ryan, Ken, Andy, Amy and Aditya to bring this movie to life for big screens everywhere.” Amy Pascal added, “I couldn’t be more excited to be working with this dream team of filmmakers. Mike, Chris, Phil, Ryan, Andy and Aditya are all the best of the best in their fields. I can’t wait to get going on this amazing project with them.”

Tyler

2025 ended up being a pretty decent year for movies, with some true standouts like Marty Supreme, Weapons, and Hamnet. But with the sun setting on 2025, it’s time to look forward to the films being released in 2026. And boy are there a lot of sequels and adaptations. I suppose that’s just the nature of modern day cinema and that’s not to say that there won’t be some original films that really blow us away this year. But those tend to be a bit more under the radar until closer to release. Even still, I’m pretty excited for many releases this year and think that we should be in store for some great additions to already established franchises. So let’s take a look at some of the upcoming movies in 2026.

And don’t forget to check out our 2026 Horror Preview as well!

wuthering heights

Wuthering Heights (February 13th)

Emerald Fennell has really made quite the impact with films like Promising Young Woman and Saltburn. Now it’s time for her to adapt one of the most famous novels out there with Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights. It is “A passionate and tumultuous love story set against the backdrop of the Yorkshire moors, exploring the intense and destructive relationship between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw.” Pairing Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi seems like the work of some mad genius. The Valentine’s Day release is sure to make this one another win for Fennell.

crime 101

Crime 101 (February 13)

Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, and Halle Berry star in this action-thriller based on the work of Don Winslow (writer of Savages). Directed by Bart Layton, whose American Animals was quite the Sundance gem eight years back, this is the kind of adrenaline-charged original fare you don’t get too often in theaters anymore. Here’s the synopsis:

Set against the sun-bleached grit of Los Angeles, CRIME 101 weaves the tale of an elusive thief (Chris Hemsworth) whose high-stakes heists unfolding along the iconic 101 freeway have mystified police. When he eyes the score of a lifetime with hopes of this being his final job, his path collides with a disillusioned insurance broker (Halle Berry) who is facing her own crossroads, forcing the two to collaborate. Determined to crack the case, a relentless detective (Mark Ruffalo) closes in on the operation, raising the stakes even higher. As the multimillion-dollar heist approaches, the line between hunter and hunted begins to blur, and all three are forced to confront the cost of their choices–and the realization that there’s no turning back.

project hail mary

Project Hail Mary (March 20th)

Andy Weir writes some of the most interesting science fiction of the modern era and it’s been far too long since we got an adaptation of one of his other big works, The Martian. The story involves: “Science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship light years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction… but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone.” While the trailer gave away a little much for my liking, it’s hard to count against Ryan Gosling in the entertainment department.

disclosure day

Disclosure Day (June 12th)

I’m still not sold on the title, but it’s hard not to be excited at the concept of Steven Spielberg returning to the world of Aliens with this UFO thriller. With a cast that includes Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Wyatt Russell and Colman Domingo, this look very intriguing. Plot details are still pretty scant but it looks more in line with Close Encounters than War of the Worlds.

Toy Story 5

Toy Story 5 (June 12th)

It’s always interesting to see what new obstacles the filmmakers manage to put in the way of our favorite toys, and the plot for Toy Story 5 seems like a long time coming: “Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the rest of the gang’s jobs are challenged when they’re introduced to electronics, a new threat to playtime.” With all the main cast returning, plus fun additions like Conan O’Brien, it’ll be nice to see another story within this world. While the third entry provided the perfect ending, the fourth proved that there’s still some juice left in the tank, and I’m excited to see what they do with this one.

supergirl

Supergirl (June 26th, 2026)

The second film in James Gunn’s DCU has some pretty high expectations going in. But if Superman was any indication, we’re in for a much less gloomy version of a Superhero movie. And while we just got a taste of her last year, this origin story should give us a better overall picture of what Supes’ cousin has been up to. Plus, it’s going to be awesome to see Jason Momoa’s Lobo chomp on a cigar in a role that he was born to play.

the odyssey

The Odyssey (July 17th)

I’m not sure if there’s any other film releasing that has the level of hype of this film. With opening day showings already being sold out for the last 6 months, there’s nothing quite like a Christopher Nolan movie. For those that never had to read the book in school, The Odyssey “After the Trojan War, Odysseus faces a dangerous voyage back to Ithaca, meeting creatures like the Cyclops Polyphemus, Sirens, and Circe along the way.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day (July 31st)

There’s a certain excitement to any new Spider-man moving coming out and, thankfully, we’ve never been too many years without one. With Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton taking over behind the camera, it’ll be interesting to see what he brings to the table. Even more exciting is that this should be putting Spidey more street level and allow us to see him less MCU-afied. Though, it’s hard to say since this will also be featuring a tons of other characters like Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, Jon Bernthal’s Punisher and Sadie Sink’s mystery character. Here’s hoping they allow the character to be a bit more independent and less reliant on what’s going on with the rest of the MCU.

the social reckoning

The Social Reckoning (October 9th)

I would have never expected there to be a sequel to David Fincher’s The Social Network yet here we are. And honestly? I’m actually pretty intrigued. A lot has happened in the world of Mark Zuckerberg since the creation of Facebook and it will be interesting to see how writer Aaron Sorkin (who is now taking over directing duties) presents the story which follows “Frances Haugen, a young Facebook engineer, who enlisted the help of Jeff Horwitz, a Wall Street Journal reporter, to blow the whistle on the social network’s most guarded secrets.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise of the Reaping (November 20th)

I’ve been pretty let down by many of the films in the Hunger Game series so when I tell you this one has me excited, just know that I’m a hard sell for these. But having read the book that this one is based, this is easily the best story yet and I can’t wait to see some of these scenes come to life. The casting has been perfect and it’ll be great to see Haymitch’s time in the games. Plus, it’s cool that they were able to get Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson back, even if it’s likely just a bookends role, where Harrelson’s Haymitch is likely telling them his story. Either way Sunrise of the Reaping “Explores Panem 24 years before Katniss’ saga, starting on the morning of the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games, where a young Haymitch Abernathy participates.

Avengers Doomsday (December 18th)

It seems like just about everyone who’s ever put on a supersuit is returning for Doomsday, not to mention Robert Downey Jr, whose Tony Stark famously died in the last Avengers teamup. Whether it’s Marvel calling a hail mary and trying to save the MCU is irrelevant if they’re able to pull off a massive spectacle that brings in the money. And they’re doing a great job of building that hype already as there have already been multiple teaser trailers (four revealing different characters returning). The story appears to feature Doctor Doom going after the children of famous superheroes, causing them to all band together to try and take him out. We’ve even got the OG X-Men returning.

Dune 4, Denis Villeneuve

Dune Part Three (December 18th)

Part of me thinks that Dune is going to move at some point to avoid Doomsday. I just can’t imagine it competing with a behemoth like an Avengers film, but I guess crazier things have been done. We’re still following Timothy Chalamet’s Paul Atreides but given how crazy the source material gets, I’ll be curious to see how it translates to a movie, as it’s always felt pretty unadaptable. Though, if anyone can do it, I’m sure Denis Villeneuve is up to the task.

San Diego Comic-Con is in full force and one of the exciting panels being featured was Project Hail Mary. In attendance for the Project Hail Mary panel were co-director Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, star Ryan Gosling, screenwriter/EP Drew Goddard, and, showing his faith in the adaptation, Andy Weir, author of the novel on which the film is based. During the panel, Miller noted that this was easily the most rewarding collaboration that he and Lord had ever had, which is saying something. As far as that collab goes, special time was devoted to waiting specifically for Goddard – who also adapted Weir’s The Martian for Ridley Scott – to climb on board.

Our Chris Bumbray was in the fray when the first five minutes of the movie were showcased to the exclusive crowd. Additionally, ScreenRant reports that Weir was glowing about what he had seen from the movie so far. Weir reveals, “I’ve seen cuts of the film, and it’s really good, guys. It’s really good. These guys, they’re amazing directors, everybody knows that. I couldn’t be happier with how things turned out.” He then adds, “I couldn’t ask for better talent in every aspect… we waited for Drew [Goddard]… We had to wait several months for him to finish [the project he was working on.]”

Anything that was complicated in the book, they didn’t change. They saw it as a problem to solve. As Miller says, this movie is a PC, not a MAC. Hype has already been strong for the movie (the trailer has exceeded 400 million views, the most for an original movie ever) but with this additional footage showcased at SDCC, it jumps even higher on our list of most anticipated movies of next year.

Here is the official write-up for Project Hail Mary, as per SDCC: “The movie follows a science teacher who wakes up on a spaceship, lightyears from home, with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: to solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction . . . but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone.”

Project Hail Mary will be the first time the team of Lord and Miller step behind the camera in over a decade, as they have shifted to producing for movies and TV and, of course, co-writing Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse to great acclaim.

One of the San Diego Comic-Con panels we were most excited about was Project Hail Mary, which audiences got a glimpse of on Saturday in coveted Hall H.

As for the first look at Project Hail Mary itself, our own Chris Bumbray was in attendance and gave us some insight into the footage. Attendees got to see the first five minutes of Project Hail Mary, which showed Gosling’s character waking up on his spaceship following an induced coma, which kicks the story into high gear. Viewers, too, may feel like they have navigated time, as the film opens with an MGM/United Artists logo from the 1980s.

Following that footage, the group showcased a scene with Sandra Hüller’s Eva Stratt, who serves as Gosling’s superior in the film. Gosling’s character, Dr. Ryland Grace, has authored an article suggesting that there may be lifeforms that have no relation to water; as it turns out, NASA found an alien he put under analysis. Regarding the character, Gosling noted that, while he is a highly intelligent man, he’s meant to come off as normal and relatable. Take, for example, another scene that was spotlighted at SDCC, where Grace experiences zero gravity for the first time, becoming overwhelmed and terrified in a way that the audience will no doubt feel as he heads towards a potential encounter. The setup for his next experiences will allow him to believe in himself after so much time being down and out.

As with the zero G scene – which was given approval by actual astronauts – accuracy is also key for Project Hail Mary in regards to the science depicted on screen, whether as major plot points or background filler. On the more technical side of things, every set is practical, including a 100-foot-long tunnel that is lit in such a way (with due credit to DP Greig Fraser) that it took the power from two other soundstages!

Weir asked, if your planet has life, what do you need for intelligent life? The answer: pack mentality, language, and a form of empathy. Goddard said that, from a screenwriting POV, this project is a nightmare. One character is human, the other is a rock. But they have empathy in that both characters are always trying to see the world from the other’s POV. Rocky is a puppet – a practical creature so it could have a real interaction with Gosling. It’s a mix of puppetry and animation. He has no eyes or face and five legs. It was a challenge to create a loveable creature out of minerals. SDCC panel attendees didn’t see Rocky, just his hand in the first scene where they meet.

Are you going to be checking out Project Hail Mary when it hits theaters on March 20th, 2026?

Project Hail Mary, Masters of the Universe, CinemaCon

CinemaCon 2025 keeps truckin’, and tonight, we have a presentation from Amazon! The studio’s been in the news lately with speculation about the future of the James Bond franchise, exciting new titles coming to Prime Video, and more. Tonight’s showcase began with a trailer for Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s Project Hail Mary, a dystopian sci-fi film starring Ryan Gosling, Milana Vayntrub, and Sandra Hüller.

Project Hail Mary is based on a book by Andy Weir, and our editor-in-chief, Chris Bumbray, says the movie looks very much like The Martian. Gosling is a high school teacher recruited on a mission to save the planet. The difference is a lot of it is him preparing for a suicide mission. The trailer includes a lot of comedy but also has a considerable scale. The footage shows Gosling on his mission alone as he grows a huge beard. The film looks like a big swing from Amazon/ MGM. The trailer got a huge reaction from the audience. The preview ends with Gosling meeting an alien lifeform with whom he bonds. The alien’s name is Rocky, and he is “the most lovable alien since ET.” The score is by Harry Styles, a sign of the times. Do you feel old yet? I certainly do.

Lord and Miller were in attendance, saying Grieg Frasier shoots the movie. The duo stresses the need to see Project Hail Mary in theaters. Meanwhile, Gosling joked, “We tried to put it on TV once, and it didn’t fit.”

Based on the novel by Andy Weir (The Martian), Project Hail Mary stars Ryan Gosling as “a middle school science teacher, Ryland Grace, who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or how he got there. He must figure out how to complete his interstellar mission to save Earth from an astronomical catastrophe completely alone, until he meets a mysterious alien who has traveled light years to save his own species from the same fate.Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall) also stars as Eva Stratt, Ryland’s superior.

Who’s ready for more from Amazon’s Masters of the Universe? The studio debuted concept art from its highly-anticipated film starring Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam, aka He-Man. Galitzine looks strikingly like the famous cartoon character. He’s in incredible shape. Amazon leans in a heavy fantasy direction for the film. There seem to be many sword fights, and the costumes are insane. It looks like the classic cartoon in ways we did not expect.

Masters of the Universe follows “ten-year-old Prince Adam, who crashed to Earth in a spaceship and was separated from his magical Power Sword—the only link to his home on Eternia. After tracking it down almost two decades later, Prince Adam is whisked back across space to defend his home planet against the evil forces of Skeletor. But to defeat such a powerful villain, Prince Adam will first need to uncover the mysteries of his past and become He-Man: the most powerful man in the Universe.

Nicholas Galitzine (Mary & George) stars as He-Man, and he’s joined by Camila Mendes (Riverdale) as Teela, Jared Leto (Morbius) as the villainous Skeletor, Idris Elba (Luther) as Man-at-Arms (a.k.a. Duncan), GLOW’s Alison Brie as Skeletor’s second-in-command Evil-Lyn, Morena Baccarin (Deadpool & Wolverine) as The Sorceress, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson (Captain America: Brave New World) as Malcolm (a.k.a. Fisto), Sam C. Wilson (Dodger) as Trap Jaw, Hafthor Bjornsson (Game of Thrones) as Goat Man, Kojo Attah (The Beekeeper) as Tri-Klops, and James Purefoy (A Knight’s Tale) and Charlotte Riley (Peaky Blinders) as He-Man’s parents, King Randor and Queen Marlena.

Masters of the Universe is directed by Travis Knight from a script by Chris Butler and is set to hit theaters on June 5, 2026.

Is space ample enough to withstand the power of two of Hollywood’s brightest stars? We’re about to find out when Oscar-nominated actress Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall) co-stars alongside Ryan Gosling (The Fall Guy, Stay, Barbie) for the upcoming interstellar epic Project Hail Mary. The feature-length project hails from Amazon MGM Studios, with Amy Pascal, Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Aditya Sood producing.

Lord and Miller will direct Project Hail Mary from a script by Drew Goddard (The Martian, Bad Times at the El Royale, The Cabin in the Woods). The film will be shot in IMAX and released wide on March 20, 2026. It is based on the Andy Weir novel of the same name—that’s right, the same guy who wrote The Martian. According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, the plot revolves around “a middle school science teacher, Ryland Grace (Gosling), who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or how he got there. He must figure out how to complete his interstellar mission to save Earth from an astronomical catastrophe completely alone, until he meets a mysterious alien who has traveled light years to save his own species from the same fate.”

Man, the science fiction genre has given me trust issues. My first thought is that this alien is doing its best to ensure humankind’s extinction. I hope I’m wrong, but like I said, trust issues.

German actress Sandra Hüller brought the house down with her show-stopping performance in last year’s Anatomy of a Fall, focusing on a woman suspected of murder after her husband’s death. In the intense drama, the woman’s half-blind son is her only salvation as the sole witness to the incident. Hüller brings the goods to the Justine Triet-directed thriller, starring Swann Arlaud, Milo Machado-Graner, Antoine Reinartz, and Samuel Theis.

What do you think about Sandra Hüller joining Ryan Gosling for Project Hail Mary? What would you do if you woke up alone on a spacecraft floating in space? Would you succumb to space madness? Gather your wits and attempt to radio home. Find the nearest airlock and eject yourself into the void. I’d give an honest shot at survival until finally giving up the ghost and preparing myself for a leisurely spacewalk. Let us know how you’d react in the comments below.
