Disney and Pixar have dropped a brand-new trailer for Toy Story 5, which follows Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the gang as they confront a new generation of children who are more enamoured of screens than playthings. Over the last 30 years, Pixar has maintained the high quality of this franchise, but each sequel feels like it’s testing fate. They always manage to pull it off, but can they do it again with Toy Story 5?

The Cast of Toy Story 5

The latest sequel features the return of Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, and the other toys as they find their jobs challenged by Lilypad, a brand-new tablet device that arrives with her own disruptive ideas about what is best for their kid, Bonnie. Will playtime ever be the same?

Tom Hanks returns as Woody, alongside Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear and Joan Cusack as Jessie. Greta Lee lends her voice to Lilypad. Some new additions include Craig Robinson as Atlas, a cheerful talking GPS hippo toy; Shelby Rabara as the excitable camera toy Snappy; Scarlett Spears as the sweet and shy 8-year-old Bonnie; Mykal-Michelle Harris as Blaze, an independent 8-year-old girl who loves animals; and Matty Matheson as the tech-fearing toy Dr. Nutcase.

The rest of the cast includes Tony Hales as Forky; Conan O’Brien as Smarty Pants; Wallace Shawn as Rex, the anxiety-riddled tyrannosaurus rex toy; Blake Clark as the ever-loyal Slinky Dog; Jeff Bergman as the sarcastic Mr. Potato Head; Anna Vocino as the nurturing Mrs. Potato Head; Annie Potts as the adventure-loving Bo Peep; Bonnie Hunt as the wise rag-doll Dolly; Melissa Villaseñor as Karen Beverly, Bonnie’s homemade toy fashioned out of a plastic knife; John Hopkins as the dignified hedgehog plush toy Mr. Pricklepants; Kristen Schaal as the plastic triceratops toy Trixie; Ernie Hudson as the action figure Combat Carl; and Keanu Reeves as Canadian daredevil toy Duke Caboom.

And, of course, John Ratzenberger returns as Hamm, the wisecracking piggybank.

Toy Story 5 is directed by Andrew Stanton, who also co-wrote the script alongside co-director Kenna Harris. The film will hit theaters on June 19.

2025 ended up being a pretty decent year for movies, with some true standouts like Marty Supreme, Weapons, and Hamnet. But with the sun setting on 2025, it’s time to look forward to the films being released in 2026. And boy are there a lot of sequels and adaptations. I suppose that’s just the nature of modern day cinema and that’s not to say that there won’t be some original films that really blow us away this year. But those tend to be a bit more under the radar until closer to release. Even still, I’m pretty excited for many releases this year and think that we should be in store for some great additions to already established franchises. So let’s take a look at some of the upcoming movies in 2026.

And don’t forget to check out our 2026 Horror Preview as well!

wuthering heights

Wuthering Heights (February 13th)

Emerald Fennell has really made quite the impact with films like Promising Young Woman and Saltburn. Now it’s time for her to adapt one of the most famous novels out there with Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights. It is “A passionate and tumultuous love story set against the backdrop of the Yorkshire moors, exploring the intense and destructive relationship between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw.” Pairing Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi seems like the work of some mad genius. The Valentine’s Day release is sure to make this one another win for Fennell.

crime 101

Crime 101 (February 13)

Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, and Halle Berry star in this action-thriller based on the work of Don Winslow (writer of Savages). Directed by Bart Layton, whose American Animals was quite the Sundance gem eight years back, this is the kind of adrenaline-charged original fare you don’t get too often in theaters anymore. Here’s the synopsis:

Set against the sun-bleached grit of Los Angeles, CRIME 101 weaves the tale of an elusive thief (Chris Hemsworth) whose high-stakes heists unfolding along the iconic 101 freeway have mystified police. When he eyes the score of a lifetime with hopes of this being his final job, his path collides with a disillusioned insurance broker (Halle Berry) who is facing her own crossroads, forcing the two to collaborate. Determined to crack the case, a relentless detective (Mark Ruffalo) closes in on the operation, raising the stakes even higher. As the multimillion-dollar heist approaches, the line between hunter and hunted begins to blur, and all three are forced to confront the cost of their choices–and the realization that there’s no turning back.

project hail mary

Project Hail Mary (March 20th)

Andy Weir writes some of the most interesting science fiction of the modern era and it’s been far too long since we got an adaptation of one of his other big works, The Martian. The story involves: “Science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship light years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction… but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone.” While the trailer gave away a little much for my liking, it’s hard to count against Ryan Gosling in the entertainment department.

disclosure day

Disclosure Day (June 12th)

I’m still not sold on the title, but it’s hard not to be excited at the concept of Steven Spielberg returning to the world of Aliens with this UFO thriller. With a cast that includes Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Wyatt Russell and Colman Domingo, this look very intriguing. Plot details are still pretty scant but it looks more in line with Close Encounters than War of the Worlds.

Toy Story 5

Toy Story 5 (June 12th)

It’s always interesting to see what new obstacles the filmmakers manage to put in the way of our favorite toys, and the plot for Toy Story 5 seems like a long time coming: “Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the rest of the gang’s jobs are challenged when they’re introduced to electronics, a new threat to playtime.” With all the main cast returning, plus fun additions like Conan O’Brien, it’ll be nice to see another story within this world. While the third entry provided the perfect ending, the fourth proved that there’s still some juice left in the tank, and I’m excited to see what they do with this one.

supergirl

Supergirl (June 26th, 2026)

The second film in James Gunn’s DCU has some pretty high expectations going in. But if Superman was any indication, we’re in for a much less gloomy version of a Superhero movie. And while we just got a taste of her last year, this origin story should give us a better overall picture of what Supes’ cousin has been up to. Plus, it’s going to be awesome to see Jason Momoa’s Lobo chomp on a cigar in a role that he was born to play.

the odyssey

The Odyssey (July 17th)

I’m not sure if there’s any other film releasing that has the level of hype of this film. With opening day showings already being sold out for the last 6 months, there’s nothing quite like a Christopher Nolan movie. For those that never had to read the book in school, The Odyssey “After the Trojan War, Odysseus faces a dangerous voyage back to Ithaca, meeting creatures like the Cyclops Polyphemus, Sirens, and Circe along the way.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day (July 31st)

There’s a certain excitement to any new Spider-man moving coming out and, thankfully, we’ve never been too many years without one. With Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton taking over behind the camera, it’ll be interesting to see what he brings to the table. Even more exciting is that this should be putting Spidey more street level and allow us to see him less MCU-afied. Though, it’s hard to say since this will also be featuring a tons of other characters like Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, Jon Bernthal’s Punisher and Sadie Sink’s mystery character. Here’s hoping they allow the character to be a bit more independent and less reliant on what’s going on with the rest of the MCU.

the social reckoning

The Social Reckoning (October 9th)

I would have never expected there to be a sequel to David Fincher’s The Social Network yet here we are. And honestly? I’m actually pretty intrigued. A lot has happened in the world of Mark Zuckerberg since the creation of Facebook and it will be interesting to see how writer Aaron Sorkin (who is now taking over directing duties) presents the story which follows “Frances Haugen, a young Facebook engineer, who enlisted the help of Jeff Horwitz, a Wall Street Journal reporter, to blow the whistle on the social network’s most guarded secrets.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise of the Reaping (November 20th)

I’ve been pretty let down by many of the films in the Hunger Game series so when I tell you this one has me excited, just know that I’m a hard sell for these. But having read the book that this one is based, this is easily the best story yet and I can’t wait to see some of these scenes come to life. The casting has been perfect and it’ll be great to see Haymitch’s time in the games. Plus, it’s cool that they were able to get Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson back, even if it’s likely just a bookends role, where Harrelson’s Haymitch is likely telling them his story. Either way Sunrise of the Reaping “Explores Panem 24 years before Katniss’ saga, starting on the morning of the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games, where a young Haymitch Abernathy participates.

Avengers Doomsday (December 18th)

It seems like just about everyone who’s ever put on a supersuit is returning for Doomsday, not to mention Robert Downey Jr, whose Tony Stark famously died in the last Avengers teamup. Whether it’s Marvel calling a hail mary and trying to save the MCU is irrelevant if they’re able to pull off a massive spectacle that brings in the money. And they’re doing a great job of building that hype already as there have already been multiple teaser trailers (four revealing different characters returning). The story appears to feature Doctor Doom going after the children of famous superheroes, causing them to all band together to try and take him out. We’ve even got the OG X-Men returning.

Dune 4, Denis Villeneuve

Dune Part Three (December 18th)

Part of me thinks that Dune is going to move at some point to avoid Doomsday. I just can’t imagine it competing with a behemoth like an Avengers film, but I guess crazier things have been done. We’re still following Timothy Chalamet’s Paul Atreides but given how crazy the source material gets, I’ll be curious to see how it translates to a movie, as it’s always felt pretty unadaptable. Though, if anyone can do it, I’m sure Denis Villeneuve is up to the task.

Toy Story 5 already seems like it has a lot going on in the installment. If you thought there wasn’t enough Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story 4, this next chapter will rectify that with not only reuniting him with Woody (after a tearful goodbye at the end of part 4), but also, when the sequel was announced, it was said that the film would involve multiple defective Buzz Lightyear toys. The teaser trailer would then showcase the upcoming conflict that the toys are facing when a new generation “plaything” starts hogging Bonnie’s attention. So, now it’s analog vs digital in vying for children’s imaginations.

Now, you can get a new look at the subplot of the multiple Buzz Lightyears thanks to Empire Magazine’s 2026 movie preview. In the newly released image, the army of Buzzes finds themselves in a strange environment and are arming their laser beams to navigate through. At the recent Annecy International Animation Festival, attendees were given a special look at the movie’s opening scene. The scene involved a container full of Buzz Lightyears as they awaken on an isolated desert island and struggle to establish a connection with Star Command. Check out the new photo below.

Toy Story 5

Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter revealed that Toy Story 5 “will explore the challenges faced by the toys in a digital-first world. ‘It’s Toy meets Tech,’ he said, outlining the film’s plot, which will see the original movies’ team of toys facing up to the challenge presented by the new favorite plaything of their eight-year-old owner Bonnie Anderson: A tech tablet called Lilypad. Woody, Buzz and the rest of the gang will confront a new generation of children more enamored with screens than playthings.” Greta Lee has joined the cast as the voice of the Lilypad tablet.

Toy Story 5 is slated for a June 19, 2026 release. Tim Allen, Tom Hanks, and Joan Cusack reprise their roles as Buzz Lightyear, Woody, and Jessie, respectively. Other members of the voice cast include Ernie Hudson, who will take over the voice of Combat Carl from the late Carl Weathers, and Anna Faris, who has been cast in an undisclosed part. It was recently reported that Conan O’Brien joins the cast as Smarty Pants, a new addition to the franchise. Andrew Stanton is directing Toy Story 5 alongside co-director McKenna Harris, while Jessica Choi produces the film.

The Toy Story series is certainly an interesting one. We have what many call a perfect trilogy, with Toy Story 3 giving audiences a firm send-off. Disney felt it could still whet the appetites of fans with little continuations in the form of shorts that included Toy Story of Terror, Toy Story That Time Forgot and Small Fry, which was nice enough. Then, Disney brought the toys back for a new sequel, which many deemed to be unnecessary, but it still turned out to be a critical and audience hit. The series gave us two emotional endings where we bid farewell to a nostalgic era, and soon, a new film will be hitting the big screens once again.

Many will surely now see Disney as milking the franchise dry; however, the quality of the films and shorts has also remained consistent for a lot of viewers. The only thing to hope now is not to have another emotional ending, as our hearts just can’t take any more. Whether or not it’s unnecessary, Toy Story 5 is on the way, and it has the makings of another fun adventure. If anything, the makers of this one wanted to take on the subject of evolving children’s entertainment as the toys come face-to-face with a tablet in the new poster with a tagline that simply states, “It’s on.” Also, many will note that while Toy Story 4 had cut down Buzz Lightyear’s involvement in the main story, Toy Story 5 looks to be putting him front and center.

Say goodbye, Woody and Buzz. The age of toys is over. Disney has released the first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5, the latest installment in Pixar’s acclaimed animated franchise, which has consistently maintained its high quality over the past thirty years. Since the release of Toy Story 2 (in 1999!), it feels like the studio has been testing fate with each new sequel, but somehow, they always manage to pull it off. Fingers crossed they can do the same with Toy Story 5.

During the Annecy Animation Film Festival in June, Pixar’s CCO Pete Docter revealed that Toy Story 5 will “explore the challenges faced by the toys in a digital-first world. ‘It’s Toy meets Tech.” The tech in question is a tablet named Lilypad, voiced by Greta Lee, which is the new favourite plaything of eight-year-old Bonnie Anderson. I mentioned at the top of the article how the Toy Story movies have pulled off a miracle each time, but one iconic filmmaker is such a big fan of the first three movies that he has refused to see the fourth movie: Quentin Tarantino. “In the case of Toy Story, the third one is just magnificent. It’s one of the best movies I’ve ever seen,” Tarantino said. And if you’ve seen the other two, it’s just devastating. But the thing is, then three years later or something they did a fourth, and I have no desire to see it. You literally ended the story as perfect as you could, so no, I don’t care if it’s good. I’m done.

Quick! Someone call the Shrek 5 police! Someone has updated the looks of Woody and Buzz Lightyear for Pixar‘s upcoming sequel, Toy Story 5. Now, before you sharpen your pitchforks and march through the streets of Emeryville, California, toward Pixar Studios, understand that the changes are minor, and we’re all going to be okay.

In a new Toy Story 5 banner posted online by The Disney Beat, Woody and Buzz sport slightly different looks. First, Woody no longer wears his Sheriff’s star on his cow-print vest, suggesting there’s a new Sheriff in town. I would guess that Woody passed the torch to Jessie, who’s in charge of the toys in Bonnie’s room in the upcoming sequel. Meanwhile, Buzz has a gold star on his spacesuit, suggesting he’s been deputized, possibly by Jessie. Is this nepotism? We know Jessie has a crush on Buzz, but he’s also a Space Ranger, making him a qualified fit for the job.

At the very least, the changes made to the characters are a matter of fashion rather than outright augmenting the characters, as DreamWorks did with its Shrek universe. Do you remember how upset everyone became when the images for Shrek 5 were released? That was a sad day for maturity within film fandom, if you ask me.

Previously, during the Annecy Animation Film Festival in June, Pete Docter revealed that Toy Story 5 “will explore the challenges faced by the toys in a digital-first world. ‘It’s Toy meets Tech,’ he said, outlining the film’s plot, which will see the original movies’ team of toys facing up to the challenge presented by the new favorite plaything of their eight-year-old owner Bonnie Anderson: A tech tablet called Lillypad. Toy Story is somewhat of a frustrating franchise for many fans purely because Toy Story 3 seemingly served as the perfect ending to the series that catapulted Pixar and took animated films into a brave new world. Despite the satisfying and emotional closure of the third movie, Disney would still give audiences the chance to revisit the toys in a small fashion with shorts that continued to show what our plastic friends were up to. Then, Toy Story 4 would be released. It would gain critical and audience acclaim. However, it meant saying an emotional goodbye yet again.

That won’t stop Disney from releasing a fifth film in the series. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a new look at Toy Story 5 was shown at the recent Annecy International Animation Festival. During their panel, Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter revealed some behind-the-scenes clips with scenes that confirm Tom Hanks’ return along with Tim Allen and Joan Cusack. Docter gave the attendees a special look at the movie’s opening scene. The scene involved a container full of Buzz Lightyears as they awaken on an isolated desert island and struggle to establish a connection with Star Command.

Per THR, Docter revealed that Toy Story 5 “will explore the challenges faced by the toys in a digital-first world. ‘It’s Toy meets Tech,’ he said, outlining the film’s plot, which will see the original movies’ team of toys facing up to the challenge presented by the new favorite plaything of their eight-year-old owner Bonnie Anderson: A tech tablet called Lillypad. Conan O’Brien has joined the cast of Toy Story 5 as Smarty Pants, a new addition to the franchise. Andrew Stanton is directing Toy Story 5 alongside co-director McKenna Harris, while Jessica Choi produces the film.

Toy Story 5 is slated for a June 19, 2026 release. The sequel will see Buzz, Woody, Jessie and the rest of the gang’s jobs challenged after being introduced to what kids are obsessed with today — electronics. Tim Allen, Tom Hanks, and Joan Cusack are expected to be reprising their roles as Buzz Lightyear, Woody, and Jessie, respectively. Other members of the voice cast include Ernie Hudson, who will take over the voice of Combat Carl from the late Carl Weathers, and Anna Faris, who has been cast in an undisclosed part.

O’Brien commented on his new gig on Instagram. He joked that he’d initially wanted the role of Woody or Buzz Lightyear, only to be told that Hanks and Allen would still be voicing the characters. Thankfully, he realized Smarty Pants is “the best character of them all.

While speaking with WIVB earlier this year, Allen teased that Toy Story 5 will focus more on Jessie, the cowgirl voiced by Cusack. “I can tell you that it’s a lot about Jessie,” Allen said. “Tom [Hanks] and I do — Woody and I — do realign. And there’s an unbelievable opening scene with Buzz Lightyear. I can give you that, but I can’t give you much more.

The first three Toy Story movies are damn-near perfect; In fact, Quentin Tarantino is such a big fan that he refused to see the fourth movie. “In the case of Toy Story, the third one is just magnificent. It’s one of the best movies I’ve ever seen,” Tarantino said. “And if you’ve seen the other two, it’s just devastating. But the thing is, then three years later or something they did a fourth, and I have no desire to see it. You literally ended the story as perfect as you could, so no, I don’t care if it’s good. I’m done.

Fans were anxious that Toy Story 4 would ruin the franchise, but it received rave reviews and grossed over $1 billion worldwide. Can Toy Story 5 continue the trend?

Disney CEO Bob Iger first announced Toy Story 5 in February 2023, though plot details remain a mystery. Reports say the sequel could split the story into two parts, with one half focusing on the toys helping Bonnie cope with the overwhelming demands of school. The two stories could intersect, though we’ll need to wait for more details.

Lastly, Marielle Heller’s horror comedy Nightbitch, starring Amy Adams, Scoot McNairy, and Mary Holland, tells the story of a woman who pauses her career to be a stay-at-home mom seeking a new chapter in her life and encounters just that when her maternal routine takes a surreal turn.

Toy Story 5, Tim Allen, Disney, Pixar

Before the Thanksgiving break in the United States, Tim Allen said Disney contacted him and Tom Hanks about reprising their iconic Toy Story roles for a fifth film in the franchise. According to Allen, “one of the creators of the original series” is in charge of the new script. Allen says Bob Iger is enthusiastic about making another Toy Story sequel, and smoke on the street implies a seasoned writer is in charge of penning the screenplay. With Disney planning two Frozen sequels, it’s easy to believe they’re going back to the toy box for Toy Story 5. Still, what does a fifth film in the beloved franchise look like? Tim Allen says he has an idea involving bringing Andy, Woody and Buzz Lightyear’s original owner, back to the series.

Speaking about Toy Story 5 with The Movie Dweeb during an interview for The Santa Clauses Season 2, Allen shared his idea for an Andy-centric sequel. Allen’s idea is to tell the new story from Andy’s perspective, with the toys’ original owner gathering his old playmates one by one to give to his kids as a gift.

You can read Allen’s idea for Toy Story 5 in full below:

“This is really off the cuff. It made me very emotional yesterday because a guy—I went to get coffee at a very small little coffee bar that he grinds his own coffee—asked me the same question just yesterday… I don’t know if this is where the story is going, but what if the whole story was through Andy as an adult? [He] has children, and they just happen to be online, and the kid goes, ‘Have you ever seen this toy?’ and Andy sees that Buzz has got a hand missing, and they’re selling these vintage toys. And Andy goes and gathers all the toys up. He has to go out and find each one of them and put them back together, bring them back to his house, and start the whole thing over again with his son. And I said, ‘What a wonderful idea, it’s all through Andy’s eyes because we [the toys] made his life, and now he’s returning that favor.”

Allen’s idea makes me question when the story would take place. Andy gave his toys to a young girl named Bonnie Anderson in Toy Story 3, so how old is Bonnie in this scenario, and how many of the original toys does she still own? Is she old enough now that she’s moved on from playing with Buzz, Rex, Trixie, Mr. Pricklepants, Jessie, and all the rest? Allen says his idea is “off the cuff,” so I’m trying not to poke too many holes in his vision, but I struggle with the thought of Andy taking his toys back after such an emotional goodbye at the close of Toy Story 3. Then again, more outlandish things can happen in service of a sequel.

A Home Improvement sequel series?

In addition to his work with Disney, Tim Allen is most famous for his long running ABC sitcom Home Improvement, in which we played TV fix-it host Tim “The Toolman” Taylor. It turns out that Allen has entertained the notion of perhaps doing a Home Improvement spinoff series, focused on the characters three kids, who were played by Jonathan Taylor Thomas, the troubled Zachery Ty Bryan and Taran Noah Smith. According to Allen, he remains on good terms with the whole cast and seems eager to one day reunite them.

How about Galaxy Quest 2?

Another movie of Allen’s that is beloved is Galaxy Quest, which has long-been rumoured to perhaps be getting a sequel. Most recently, news came down about a potential Galaxy Quest TV show happening at Paramount Plus, but with Allen so busy with his current Disney project, his participation seems unlikely – at this point.

What do you think of Allen’s idea for Toy Story 5? Do you have a plot in mind for another film starring Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and the rest of the gang? Let us know in the comments below.
