Ryan Gosling says he’s had discussions with Marvel about playing Ghost Rider but ‘It’s a complicated situation’

While Marvel Studios’ future remains mostly unknown after Avengers: Secret Wars releases on December 17, 2027, that won’t stop people from dream-casting their favorite heroes and villains for future projects. One Marvel character fans are clamoring for is Ghost Rider, the stuntman caught between life and death with a burning desire to punish the guilty and ride through the streets like a bat out of hell. For several years, Ryan Gosling has remained the favorite to play Johnny Blaze, aka Ghost Rider, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Recently, while talking about his new film, Project Hail Mary, on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gosling urged fans not to lose hope regarding his chances of playing the chain-wielding hero with a head of flames.

Gosling gives Marvel fans hope

“We’ll keep hope alive,” Gosling said on the podcast. “Some Dicussions have been had. It’s a complicated situation.” Granted, this doesn’t move the needle one way or another, but it’s nice to hear Gosling acknowledge the role and confirm that he’s in contact with Marvel about the part.

Kevin Feige loves the idea of Gosling playing Ghost Rider

“Hey man, if Ryan wants to be Ghost Rider…” said Marvel boss Kevin Feige, when he learned about Gosling’s interest in the role. “Gosling’s unbelievable. Ryan is amazing… I’d love to find a place for him in the MCU. He’s dressed up as Ken on Venice Beach [filming ‘Barbie’] and gets more press than giant movies coming out that weekend. It’s amazing.”

Ghosts of the past

Meanwhile, everyone remembers Marvel’s Ghost Rider movie from 2007, starring Nicolas Cage as Johnny Blaze. Directed and written by Mark Steven Johnson, the film also starred Eva Mendes and Sam Elliott, but its reception was mixed. Many Ghost Rider fans found Cage’s performance to be over-the-top, but this begs the question: What did you expect? Let’s not forget that 2007 was the same year that Spider-Man 3, Tim Story’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, and Walt Disney’s Underdog were released. In other words, it was not a great year for superhero cinema. Still, a sequel titled Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance was released in 2011, with Cage reprising his role as Johnny Blaze, and the filmmakers behind Crank and Crank: High Voltage behind the camera. The sequel brought even more Cage-related wackiness to the character, ultimately leading to Ghost Rider’s retirement from feature-length films. Although years later, Gabriel Luna played Robbie Reyes, another version of Ghost Rider, for the fourth season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Fans enjoyed Luna’s interpretation of the character, though he only remained a part of the series for one season.

I could see Ryan Gosling playing Ghost Rider. Why not, right? That’s certainly better than him playing a member of the Nova Corp. It would be bold of Marvel to announce a Ghost Rider film as part of their post-Secret Wars lineup, but stranger things have happened. If Gosling is passionate about the role, I say we give him a shot.
