In addition to starring in Beast, Crowe also co-wrote the script with David Frigerio (Muzzle). The film is directed by Tyler Atkins (Ocean Boy). The rest of the cast is rounded out by Luke Hemsworth (Westworld), Bren Foster (The Last Ship), Amy Shark (Love, Simon), Mojean Aria (The Enforcer), Kelly Gale (Plane). The producers on board for the project include John Schwarz, David Frigerio, Michael Schwarz and Tim O’Hair.

The official synopsis reads: “After years away from the cage, a once-feared MMA champion is pulled back in for the fight of his life when his younger brother is put in danger. Reuniting with the trainer who once made him a legend, he commits to one final showdown against the reigning title-holder — a brutal fighter determined to dismantle the ex-champ’s legacy in front of the world. Pushed to his breaking point, the contender’s stakes are simple: win, or lose everything he’s built.“

Grindstone Entertainment Group co-distributes the film as a Broken Open Pictures and Deeper Water Films production. It was made in association with Armagh Films / Media Finance Capital / Three 777 Films / Stan Entertainment / Black Pearl Productions / In the Tent Productions / Spectrum Entertainment and Solution Entertainment Group.

MacPherson on Beast

While speaking with People, MacPherson says Beast is a “true underdog story that’s full of heart and purpose. It’s both a family story of redemption and sacrifice as well as a high-level action film. It’s one for both MMA fans and film lovers alike.“

MacPherson has worked with Crowe before on Poker Face and Land of Bad. “Russell Crowe is a master, and I’m fortunate that this was our third film together,” he said. “He elevates every project he works on, and Beast was no different. He brings a lifetime of cinema experience to every day on set and I still learn so much working with him.“

Beast will hit theaters on April 10.
